  1. 1. Would anyone recommend a wheel builder, and

    2. Does anyone know a wheel builder who does free quotes

    Thanks

  2. If you've got the time / inclination it's definitely worth giving it a go yourself. Actually quite therapeutic. I've only built four, and they're never going to be as perfect as a proper wheelbuilder, but there's a sense of satisfaction (and makes me understand the wheel better so fixing it when it goes slightly out of true now seems second nature).

But otherwise, a few about. I used a chap over in Fife a couple of years back and those wheels are still rolling (though I did have to do some remedial work on one a few months after starting to use them). Dave Seaman of the Bike Shed.

Bound to be someone in Edinburgh - I'd suspect the Bicycle Works would do you some wheels. Or Eastside Bikes?

Gamma on Dean Park Street (off Raeburn Place) made me some wheels for my road bike last year. They've been great.

I've used Bicycle Works and Hart's Cyclery for wheelbuilding and they both know their stuff and will build you good wheels to your precise specification (or just "a wheel" if you just want "a wheel"). I would certainly recommend both, never had a problem with different wheels built by them for touring / commuting / winter use.

http://www.thehappycog.co.uk/ - He's very good and builds most of the wheels for many of my offroady friends.

Andy at Eastside bikes built my wheels and I'm very pleased. We designed them together and he was true to his quote.

I've bought two sets of wheels from Spa cycles and been very happy with them. They're touring focused so nice robust wheels for commuting.
