What do people think, feel, know about Titanium mountain bikes? If this was your last bike, which one, if any would you buy? And of course reasons as to why you would buy a Ti MTB.

It doesn't matter why I would buy a Ti mountain bike. The important thing is why you would.

    But since you asked....

I would buy one because I started MTBing in the '90's when Ti was 'the thing'. I'm a touch heavier than average and I don't really trust carbon for longevity in harsh conditions. And if you are going to spend a significant amount on a frame that's not carbon or full suspension then you have 2 options remaining. Ti or hand built steel. Now there are a lot of very nice high end steel builders out there, and they will build you anything you like. But unless you are an odd size and need custom adjustments for that, or you want a particular feature or something that just isn't available off the shelf, then there is a risk with a custom bike. What if you just don't like it? What if it's not as good as the £300 frame it is supposed to replace? Not many folk would give you close to retail on a nearly new custom frame. They would be better off buying one to their own spec for a few extra quid. But a high end off the shelf frame is another matter. If you don't like that after a couple of rides then you have a better chance of getting a significant wedge of your cash back. And you are buying more of a known quantity. Then we talk about the physical benefits of titanium. Won't rust. Scratch it up and then just have it refinished. You can even do it yourself with a scotchbrite pad. And then there is the mythical ride quality? I think that one is a bit of a myth nowadays as a good design should be able to build in the ride quality you want (within limits of course) in either steel or Ti. But a good Ti frame should ride at least as nice as anything else. And finally the cache. Even if it's just me that sees it. So that's why I would buy a Ti frame (or might already have).

As to what to buy if you were to decide to bite the bullet. Too tough a question given you haven't narrowed down the remit at all. What are you looking to do with it? What do you ride currently, and what do you like or dislike about it. And what is your budget?

But given a blank check I like Moots. http://moots.com/our-bike/

hi all good points - the reason is the feel of the bike - i tried a ti 29er mtb HT with 130mm forks and could feel the difference. It could be the wheels or the forks and the frame. I like cable runs along the top tube and I dislike the bracing point on the seat stay/chain stay but that is me. The price full bike is appx 1-3k mtb ht but some bikes cost way more - A seven will cost 5k appx. I like both Enigma and Van Nicholas and i like singletrack.
