In order to make the daily nursery drop-off more weatherproof I recently moved from using a child bike-seat, to using a 2-child trailer.

Although this is hugely enjoyable for most of the time, I am more acutely aware of infrastructure that prevents rather than promotes active travel, particularly for those of us using "non-standard" setups.

There was one particular chicane on a cycle route near me that fell very short of the Cycle by Design guidelines (http://www.transportscotland.gov.uk/report/j185500-06.htm#cycleways). I reported it and an work order has now been put in place to have it changed (although due to the low footfall and number of cycles using this route, it's arguable that it should just be removed).

Another chicane that I have problems with has recently been installed on NCR1 at Cramond Road South. This is not quite as bad as the first one but also falls short of the guidelines.

The council acknowledge that it doesn't meet the minimum spec in the guidance but it seems clear that they are not going to do anything about it. What is the point of having minimum standards if councils can simply ignore them? I wonder whether Sustrans have partly funded the work and whether they are happy/care that it doesn't meet the minimum standards.

Does anyone know of any chicanes that actually meet the minimum spec of the guidance?

Must get out tape measure; several places on the A8 'main cycle route' are nowhere near those guidelines.

    Recently installed?

The chicane gates were removed temporarily at 3pm or so on the day of Pedal for Scotland, in order to alleviate bicycle congestion at the crossing, when the route to Murrayfield reverted to NCN1 early in order to alleviate motor vehicle congestion caused by too many drivers the earlier road route around Bruntsfield Golf Course and south to Craigcrook Road.

I'd assumed that they would reinstate the chicane straight after PfS.

That crossing was reconfigured earlier this year making things better at the crossing for bikes going from the Blackhall Path to Barnton Avenue, IIRC. However, in order to take away with one hand what they had just given with the other, they changed the chicane the make it more awkward to cycle through (I think it had been made easier to cycle through a year or two before by moving one of the chicane fences).

Obvs, the real issue here is that the Council's policy in favour of shared rather than separated facilities leads to ped/cyc conflict. I would just note that there's loads of room along Davidson's Mains High Street for a segregated bike lane...

Cycling By Design is a double-edged sword, however councils do not have to abide by it, as it applies only to the trunk road network.

This is good, as some of the design guidance is poor, but is bad as some of it may be beneficial...

And council engineers can either ignore it when it suits them, or abide by it should they wish to play safe.

Recently in terms of the glacial pace of the council. The crossing was reconfigured in June but I was on holiday when the chicane was installed in perhaps late June/early July? I first contacted the council mid August and have had two replies from them so far.

Correspondence can be seen on the fixmystreet report https://www.fixmystreet.com/report/678602
