There has been some considerable anti cycling sentiment on various Portobello forums recently due to a few careless cyclists going too fast when it's busy.

Bit concerned with the recent suggestions to try and trap a cyclist though. From the latest thread - original post and comment by another poster.

Middle age guy, 6 foot, with a day-glo jacket on with a black band down the back heading east, 6pm on the prom: Just barreled past at the Beach House doing who knows what speed. Brushed my arm as he blew past. I'm just out of hospital so what would have happened had he hit me, or a little kid for that matter? Going to try and stop him tomorrow where it gets narrow at the bottom of Morton Street. I'm a cyclist but would never do that speed on the prom.

Disgusting cycling. .. is there no way of trapping this numpty.

Down on the prom to watch the Cockenzie demolition at the weekend and I have to agree that there was some too-fast cycling. If you didn't also cycle it would be very very easy to develop a hatred of 'cyclists'.

Can I respectfully suggest that whenever this discussion comes up that the main point to make in return is that when bicycle use is squeezed off the normal roads then this is inevitable.

This is a classic social exclusion / discrimination situation. Put several groups all at a disadvantage compared to the group with the most power and then let them fight for what's left. All their energies are spent arguing about this rather than fighting for what's really needed, which is a change from those with the actual power.

In our case there are few nice places to walk - and few nice places to cycle - and anyone wanting anywhere actually nice to walk OR cycle ends up on the canal, the Portobello Prom, or the NEPN.

I've been meaning to try to find some literature from Apartheid South Africa (or a similar situation) to illustrate points like this. Anyone have an example...?

@rbrtwtmn I think you've described the situation perfectly there; no need for supportive literature, unless you're preparing a thesis. I hadn't really thought of it like that but it's now so clear.
