Hi everyone, not been on here scince I got my new ride, cuilin, from co op. Love it, riding all the time, even to and from work. Thing is...... I help out at a local youth group.Am looking for cycle routes of approx 30.50 miles for teenagers , varying levels of fitness, some special needs. Have already taken round the forth, kincardine and forth brigs, but looking for other circular ,off road ish (or safe on road)routes round central, eastern scotland. We have a mini bus so transport to and from an area isnt a problem. The canal is fine but a wee bit boring after a wee while. We take our food and drink in the adult staffs panniers as money can be tight for some so any interesting, not too strenuous routes would be well appreciated.

Have you tried the National Cycle Network Route out towards Dunbar? The section between Longniddry and Haddington is off road (old railway line). From Haddington to East Linton it's quiet roads, or off road.

Could be made circular by going via coast/North Berwick on way out/back.

Since you have a bus, another possibility, would be that you drop of the cyclists at one point, then drive the mini bus to the intended destination, and the driver would then cycle/train back part of the way to meet the rest of the group.

The Off Road Round The Pentlands Route is good. It is circular. Start say at Middle Meadow Walk, cycle to Commie Pool, on road into park take left before the entrance to the park, into the houses, this is where the innocent tunnel starts, novices to the route always like that bit. You can then go off road to Musselburgh - Big W and continue following the off road route next to The Esk to Whitecraigs where you can take off road route to Dalkieth where you can take offroad route to Penicuick. THen cycle on quiet country road to Flotterstone (the last bit is busy on A701) but for very short length of time and there is a pavement of sorts. From Flotterstone take the road up towards Balerno. The road ends and there is 1.5 miles of track, still pretty dry yesterdaty. You can push bikes if people don't want to cycle, takes you out at very top of Balerno, you can then cycle down to the start of the Water of Leith path and return to MMW. ~40 miles

Here's a Pentlands one about 20 miles - mostly off-road or quiet roads.

The off-road bits are the WoL path which is mostly good - unless there has been a lot of road, a short section of stoney farm track and then traffic free tarmac round the reservoirs.

A wide range of routes courtesy of the EBC

Plenty of good quiet country lanes in East Lothian to explore around Haddington, Ormiston and Pencaitland, with option to join up with the Pencaitland Railway walk mentioned above. Some small but sharp hills in the vicinity to stretch the legs. Midlothian is great too - quiet roads around Carrington and heading down the moor road from Penicuik to West Linton, so long as you avoid the "three As" (701-3) and a couple of old railway lines heading from Penicuik towards Musselburgh via Roslin and Bonnyrigg and Dalkieth
