    I went through various cheap swim earplugs and none seemed to seal properly, many hurt a lot. I needed something due to ear problems that flared up after regular swimming.

    Eventually plumped for a moulded set from House of Hearing - about £80 if I recall. Comfortable and effective.

    I once procured a lady's phone number for David Wilkie in an embryonic Alan Partridge type situation.

    Embryonic Alan Partridge

    This sounds like a TV show Alan Partridge would pitch.

    Wilkie was "accused of swimming too fast and not taking into account other pool users."
    Pool rage is a thing... There's an art to sharing a lane with other swimmers; I know I haven't always got it right.

    In the article this appeared to happen in2015?

    Wilkie 62 now. Bet he still spanks them all in Bracknell. Etiquette - if your sole is touched let them by?

    Years ago I was in the new swimming pool in prestwick, shallow end all the way along the pool. So no diving. I was tanking up and down, no one else in the pool. Except this one other guy who was annoying me by also swimming quite fast.we kept out of each other's way. When I got out I was quite tired as had been going some to keep up with the guy. Anyway he eventually comes into the changing room and it was my best friend from school just back from his Royal marine training in lympstone, Devon. His dad has watched the whole panto and thought it very funny

    I can report that I swam in the Feshie. Twice. I am a reluctant swimmer, positively hydrophobic, but that was glorious. The second pool, away from the road was a thing of real beauty.

    So, I seem to have signed up for a triathlon this weekend. It's only a 200m swim but is there anything I should be aware of before I get in the water? I've done some shorter stretches of outdoor swimming this summer and think I'll be OK with the distance if I take my time but it's the unknown unknowns I'm more concerned about.

    @acsimpson

    Never done a triathlon before, but friends who did said that the swim can be difficult because of the lack of space- be prepared to be kicked/punched/grabbed as everyone tries to find the fastest way from A to B.

    Think if I was doing a triathlon, I'd set off at the back and be prepared to lose a couple of minutes and concentrate on the big picture

    I was swimming today in unheated pool, I only left as getting sun burnt

    Transition from water to bike is a faff. The pros seem to have their shoes clipped into the pedals already.

    @paddyirish, Sounds good, so start at the back and stay at the back. That would suit my swimming style well.

    @gembo, risk of sunburn should be minimal at 8PM tomorrow night. I don't think I'm taking it seriously enough to pre-clip my shoes, I'll have a kayaking wetsuit on anyway.

    Did I mention there is time off for drinking beer while transitioning :-)

    I'm told the key to swimming is not to stop breathing. Is that helpful? Helped me.

    @IWRATS

    That's probably pretty good advice for cycling too. Thanks! I'll take heed

    @acsimpson- good luck!

    I am a mess in the water. Took me an age to understand I could breathe out underwater, wound up like across between a puffer fish and a beetroot. (Swimming ability of the root vegetable breathing ability of the fish.)

    @IWRATS I knew exactly what you meant, my trouble with the crawl in particular is that I don't want to get a mouthful of water when breathing in, so lift my head too far out of the water and stop all forward momentum.

    My swimming will win no speed or beauty awards

    Me too, likely in the same lesson. Lobban was my nemesis.

    Was it you used to bellow 'Whale!' as Stan tried to patrol Grosvenor Place?

    Memory supplies;

    He bounces about

    He's so fat
    He's not thin

    Thanks IWRATS, my problem is similar to paddyirish I'm so busy breathing I don't have time to swim. I'll more likely do breaststroke as that way I can breath and swim.

    @acsimpson, if you side crawl you can drink whilst swimming??

    For reasons that aren't completely clear, I decided to sign up for a (half) triathlon in April. Thought I should make sure I can still swim beforehand, so tonight I swam a mile.

    I will suffer for this tomorrow, I'm sure.
