"The Forth road and rail bridges are to close during rush hour after demolition materials were found in the area.

"Police Scotland said it believed the materials were to have been used in the demolition process at the site of the new Queensferry Crossing.

"The Forth Road Bridge and the approach roads to it will close for two hours from 18:00 while a controlled explosion is carried out.

"The nearby rail bridge will also close temporarily.

"The closure had originally been scheduled for 16:00 but was pushed back until 18:00.

"Ch Insp Irene Ralston said: 'Exposed wires were discovered today at the Queensferry Crossing, and while this poses no immediate risk to the public, as a precaution we are compelled to close the Forth Road Bridge and the M90.

"'We would advise motorists to avoid the area from 18:00 and seek alternative routes. We thank the public for their understanding at this time.'"
