    They have had a recommendation from the security people that they need a watchtower because they can’t see what is happening the other side of the gate when it is closed.

    CCTV?

  3. A one inch drillbit, with a painting of the Mona Lisa on the other side so no-one realises when you're peeking through her eye...

    :-D

    It'd need to be Mary Queen of Scots, and/or Bonnie Prince Charlie.

    They could employ someone (several people!) for 20 years for that price!

  7. steveo, were you just p*ssing by the gate?

    The commenters on the EEN are a funny bunch. Straight into slamming the MSPs for being precious and looking after themselves etc etc. I do wonder if they've even read the story, with MSPs thinking it's daft, but rather it being the managers of the Parliament (who aren't actually the MSPs) who are pushing this.

    I think we should get them to re-tender for the job, PS I'll go into a consortium with you and we can get a CCTV system from B&Q and install it for £1M, which must surely be a bargain in comparison...

    The drawings can be seen at the above link, I'm not sure "Barlinnie" and "watchtower" are perhaps the best descriptions of what is proposed.

    The security "lodge" will overlook the gate here;

    But, yes, CCTV systems are such that there's probably little need for this structure for observation purposes alone. (unless they actually want somewhere to put armed police).
