The council spend money on repairing roads?!

too many jobs were being classed as emergency

And what does that tell you? Oh, to reduce spending. Of course.

"sparking fresh fears over crumbling surfaces and damage being done to cars."

Because damage to cars is the most important thing here - she says, having unhappily observed the growing size of the North Bridge / Princes St crater again this morning. That'll eventually bring down someone on two wheels (unmotorised or otherwise) - better hope there's no bus right behind them when it does.

"the growing size of the North Bridge / Princes St crater"

That's got past the 'emergency fix' state!

I think it's at the 'yes we're going to do something about it' state.

Phew! It's starting to resemble some sort of entrance to the underworld at the minute.

I think the Four Yorkshiremen are living in the hole at the intersection of Elm Row and Montgomery Street.

Hole at the intersection of Elm Row and Montgomery Street? Bloody luxury. In my day we had to live between tramtracks...(etc etc, marks off for insisting that its a Python sketch)

Did notice very potholed routes in and out of town today curiously enough and this is before the frosts. Even canal towpath fragging a bit

I think if you go down that hole at North Bridge you come up again under the railway bridge at Abeyhill and Abbeymount; https://goo.gl/maps/HF7YqYSnbcC2

    (much more impressive now)

    a Python sketch

Yes, I think it first appeared in the 'At Last the 1948 Show' with Marty Feldman and some fresh faced proto-Pythons.

Tram tracks? You were lucky. We had to claw out a groove in t'tarmac with our bare hands.

  12. Wow, I hadn't experienced the gigantic hole at the bottom of North Bridge until this morning. Any guerilla planters would be able to fit an entire allotment in there!

Not sure if I saw this here on a different thread but if anyone knows a good street artist then maybe a Scottish version of this would help speed things up.

    From link -

    "

Crumbling streets have long provoked outrage in Russia, where even president Vladimir Putin has attributed the condition of the country’s streets to pervasive corruption in the road construction industry.

I often thought when I see some huge potholes filled with water, I should float paper boats in them with little printed passengers in them of Lesley Hinds or Keith Brown or Neil Greig (not sure anyone would recognise!) in them.

Crazy thing is there's £1.3M million to be spent reconstructing Brighton Place in Porty with setts. And it'll take ~56 weeks. How's that protected in the budget...

Check out the addresses of councillors; that was why a similar amount was squandered on badly laid setts in Thirlestane Road alongside a refusal to narrow the crossing at the top of Spottiswoode St

Martin Hannan did well in that opinion piece to get in "second-class citizen" and "hard-pressed motorists":

"If you want to be a second-class citizen in Edinburgh, just buy yourself a car."

"Cutting the emergency repairs budget is another insult to the hard-pressed motorists of this city. It must not be allowed to proceed."

The hard of thinking seem to be missing the point; emergency repairs are an expensive and ineffective way of repairing roads. With limited resources, more needs to go into the routine maintenance budget. That should see fewer potholes and botched temporary work.

The hole outside Waverley Gate is quite impressive though. I wonder how deep it will go before it is addressed?

"If you want to be a second-class citizen in Edinburgh, just buy yourself a car."

I genuinely don't understand how people can believe this. Especially given a huge amount of the "anti car" stuff is surely just an attempt to manage too many and ever-increasing numbers of vehicles in not enough space?

Do the thickos that write such rubbish not realise that it's far worse for cyclists as it's potentially life threatening. Oh silly me these cyclists don't pay for the roads and none drive either!

I want the roads repaired for my safety on my bike not because it's a bit bumpy in my car.

    Just buy yourself a car?

Really? When car ownership in Edinburgh is at an all time high. Maybe he means buy yourself another car or a bigger car?
