  1. Just seeing a number of Tweets about a bike/car collision this morning on Leith Walk near Annandale Street; hope the person involved isn't too badly hurt :-(

Saw it myself. Looked bad and of course the ambulance was struggling to get through because of all the cars.

    Evening News Story

    Sounds bad.

Passed myself and saw the aftermath, at least 10 polis cars and vans and many polis.

Looked like cyclist heading North on inside lane had been struck by a car turning into Annandale St. Outside lane probably stationary at that time with cars. Awful.

I was nearly wiped out on Queen Street this morning by someone in the stationary outside lane who suddenly moved into the inside lane without so much as a glance or indicating, only to return to the outside lane further up the queue. If I had been a split second further on, I would either have been knocked into the parked car on my left or rear-ended / T-boned the car.

It's these momentary thoughtless (but probably habituated) maneuvers that cyclists are so vulnerable to when there is nothing to segregate you from the general traffic. If it was car-on-car it might be some dented bodywork and everyone walks away to argue about insurance, if it's a cyclist it's probably life changing.

Very strange way to report a car / bike collision from "live Edinburgh news"

The 25-yer-old man was cycling near to Haddington Place at the junction with Annandale Street when he fell off at around 8.45am.

"Very strange way to report a car / bike collision"

Especially as the original story is still there -

Horrible news - hope the cyclist is ok

  9. Update: Comments appear to have been turned off now.

And they've 'accidentally' left the comments option open again - something they habitually do 'in error' each time there's a cycling death / serious injury.

Have asked them via Twitter to close the comments off, but it's not happened yet. Hope they do so before the usual morons realise they can post their anti-cycling drivel....

BBC have now changed their article to fall as well, though they say police are investigating what happened.

The road surface is abysmal through there, in fact the entire northbound Leith Walk bus lane resembles a ploughed field.

The chipwrapper article has now been updated to say "It’s understood no cars were involved in the incident and the road reopened around 11am."

There was a car stopped as if it had hit the cyclist; maybe they were just a witness.

Perhaps the resurfacing work can now be brought forward in advance of any road re-design. It really is appalling.

This sounds very similar to my own incident a couple of years back. A private taxi was trying to get the jump on traffic and turn right across me into a side street. I had to slam on the anchors when he crossed into my side of the road, brakes locked and I flipped over resulting in a broken hand, lot's grazing and shock. I didn't actually hit the car (or vice versa) but Police still charged him with careless driving and his insurance company paid out. Point is...a car doesn't have to hit you for it to be the cause of injury.

I don't know if that's what happened here but the 'chatter' around the incident seems to suggest a car was involved somewhere.
