Survey: Edinburgh residents want more money spent on cycling

I heard that report on the radio this morning, apparently 72% of respondents to the survey want to see more cycling in Edinburgh. It was a decent, if too short, little package, so didn't have time to fit in any anti-cycling cliches. Hopefully this represents some sort of tipping point. Cue the angry backlash of the dinosaurs.

According to BikeBiz:
"ICM Unlimited carried out the survey and interviewed a representative sample of 11,016 adults aged 16+, ensuring at least 1,100 were questioned in each city. (Greater Manchester had 4,000 respondents.)."

Very positive results - lets politicians know that most people have favourable views on cycling. Helps counter the vocal ranting of EEN commenters and their ilk.

It's just been on'You and Yours'. Interestingly, in a reasonably long segment we heard from two cyclists and from Sustrans and that was it. There was no 'balance' about how cyclists always ride on the pavement and run red lights.
Maybe the tide really is turning.

Perhaps, given the size of the survey sample, it is rather more tricky for journalists to disbelieve and play the usual "upping the ante" game of stoking controversy?

Not mentioned in the EEN yet. I suspect that they have their clickbait story today (Princes St cameras) and don't want to confuse the frothers with another one. It'll make an appearance tomorrow no doubt.

I vaguely remember some stat saying that x% of Edinburgh residents want good cycle facilities built even if that means taking away space from cars. I looked for it in bike life but couldn't see it, does anyone remember it or where it's from?

I vaguely remember some stat saying that x% of Edinburgh residents want good cycle facilities built even if that means taking away space from cars, as long as it doesn't take away "my" parking space(s).

Got to remember that car ownership in Edinburgh is in decline. It is just that not all Edinburgh residents have realised that this is a good thing...
