It rocketed to number one – jumping 97 places from its previous position during the last survey in 2013.

The study hailed the Capital as having “low crime rates” in comparison with the other areas

It didn't feel like it as we walked with young children back to Marchmont from Haymarket at 4pm last Tues.

Traffic was awful, the pavements were narrow and the delays crossing on the green man interminable.

South side was superb in the eighties

Leith was still vibing in the nineties

New Town has always been verboten

and anywhere west of Lothian Rd is basically Weegieworld

Leith is still 'vibing', especially Leith Walk these days... It seems to be where all the young people 'hang out'.

Sample of 5000 people asked face to face isn't exactly scientific.

"anywhere west of Lothian Rd is basically Weegieworld" ?
    comeontae...

5000 face-to-face interviews with randomly chosen residents is a massive undertaking. The sample is huge for this type of thing and the methodology seems pretty robust. More details can be found in the report to Councillors at:

Had lovely holiday to Edinburgh yesterday. Bit of designer shopping (angle poise lamp but maybe four times size of desk variety), parked car at Pleasance then nice walk with the family through old town toJohn Lewis (washing machine on blink), then up to portrait gallery then over to national gallery then through princes street gardens east, up to high st, fire eaters, down Victoria street and stop at James Connolly memorial (only bit of grit really) along cowgate to holyrood tap for very nice burgers, very chilled.

You should just have driven to Livingston instead.

Yup, just to confirm that 5000 is a huge sample, and face to face interviews serious stuff. I have (almost) survived my first semester teaching research design, so I can now say that with some authority.

THE CAPITAL has retained its spot as the best city in the UK for the third year running.

Edinburgh beat London to remain at the top of the list compiled by the Telegraph from a poll of 75,000 people.

Of Edinburgh, the newspaper said: “The winner for the third year in a row. Why? From the history-soaked medieval tenements, vennels and wynds of the Old Town to the sweeping elegance of the Georgian New Town, Edinburgh deserves its reputation as one of the most beautiful and compelling cities in the world.”

Today at lunch time I walked up the steps to high school yards, there is a really dinky old building at top a tourist was taking photo of and then I took the never before presented chance because the gate has always been shut through the university quads spotting Old Surgeons Hall and a number of really old and grand old university buildings excepts the staff counselling service which is in a horrible permanent portacabin. That aside the whole old town them up to university was completely compelling
