    great story.

very much the same generation as my neighbour, who I wrote about on the crem thread:

"Was glad we'd cycled though. The deceased had cycled on his own to North Berwick when he was 9, and to see the opening of the Kincardine bridge when he was 11. He helped restart the Dunedin cycle club. And met his wife-to-be on a cycling holiday in Ireland. It seemed only right to get to his funeral by bike."

RIP. I first heard of him from reading Herbie Sykes' 'The Race Against the Stasi', which I'd highly recommend.

Lovely story. On the subject of life in East Germany I'd also recommend Stasiland by Anna Funder.

Just wanted to add before this thread disappears off the page, what a heart-warming story of Ian Steel's life. This man deserves a public memorial somewhere.
