Well it did then! Sign in is free.

Curiously doesn't ask for a sign-in if you use the mobile version

yes sorry, that link did in fact work perfectly well (as in fact so did the other ones, I wish to retract any suggestion of non-working links) but then asked me to sign in which is free, but for unknown reasons I did not fancy signing in right at that moment - seemed to be a cross between punjabi and italian restaurant, ah but then I got the full review from the second link kindly inserted and it is a Sikh restaurant and the review made me want to go

    Has anyone mentioned http://www.mimisbakehouse.com/Photos.html ?

The Mull cheddar sandwich with caramelised onion chutney, salad and chips was delicious and substantial enough to be worth the £6.50, and the cakes are lovely. What struck me most was the quality of the salad with the sandwich - it wasn't a few limp past-it leaves, it was proper tasty salad.

Mini's us ace. Much better than other cake-vendors like Loopy Lorna's.

I've had reason to sample Loudon's cakes, sandwiches, coffee and service twice recently and haven't been massively impressed. "Lots of space for buggies or panniers" is perhaps the biggest selling point.

I'd tend to have to agree with Wingpig about Loudon's. I think the cafe has simply gone for quantity over quality. The Danish pastries are huge. The coffee mug is huge. The place itself is huge.

But nothing about it is special and set apart from other cafes.

Saying that though... Aside from the abundance of babies the last time I was in (what did I expect for a weekday afternoon?), it was a pleasant enough coffee stop.

  10. Ah see, I quite like Loudon's, but maybe that's cos I'm comparing it to Costa or Starbuck's nearby. And huge it may be, got to get there early at lunchtime to get a seat. If I see a queue of any sort then I give it a wide berth (which I guess marks it out as not being special otherwise I'd go in anyway - and yes, the amount of 'mummies who lunch' (meaning a very specific sort, the skinny, SUV driving kept-women types) is a touch offputting).

Hmmm, I'm talking myself off the place.

I'd second Mimi's. Great place that I spent a bit of time in after being made redundant and before starting this job. Not had cause to be down that way at a suitable time since.

    Apart from the air quality?

Current favourite places worth popping into for the hell of it include Coffee Mill (West Port) or Rock Salt (Constitution St) (if sitting down) and Victor Hugo (Melville Terrace?) or Relish (Commercial St) if picking up something to eat elsewhere. Reliably nice coffee, which is more important than fanciness of cake.

    Victor Hugo

The Union Coffee Roasters coffee is very nice. And very well made. I wasn't able to quite replicate with the grounds at home in the Moka Express. But came close.

The sandwiches are delish too and served on a big rustic lump of wood.

I like Victor Hugo, but have never found the food that amazing, but it'll be forever linked with the next door hospital so possibly that's skewed it a bit for me.

I don't know if broughton deli has been mentioned (next to Blue Moon Cafe and the sex shop) food there is lahvley. Or go to the Blue Moon for HUGE nachos, or next door for a HUGE, actually, no.

Still not found better coffee than at the Wellington/Press Coffee chain or Kilimanjaro/Artisan (see earlier)

  15. Ah yes, Artisan Roast on Broughton Street is good.

Our work coffee-place is a Starbuck's offshoot and on the cups and signs it proclaims 'Proud to be brewing Starbuck's Coffee'. Seriously, proud? Though it does beat the stuff out the machine...

Always quite liked the Beanscene coffee, but not been in a wee while now - the food was always hit or miss.

I must have hit Wellington on a bad day, or rather three bad days, spaced widely apart.

As with Falko I find that the decaf from Kilimanjaro is less unpleasant than the full-fat. Black Medicine has still not failed.

Beanscene are the only big-chain vendor still supplying edible chocolate muffins, though they're usually warm.

Weird, i can hand on heart say I've never had a bad coffee there (which I couldn't actually say about the real Wellington :) )

Anyone tried Ephemeris Tea Room (http://ephemeris.co.uk/) in Marchmont? My wife is pretty excited about as she has just found out they sell yerba mate.

Do they serve it at the thermonuclear temperature the south americans drink it at?

Always find that interesting when I'm at the big food trade shows that the meat reps on the Urugyan and Brazilian stands all have a gourd with a metal straw and a wee flask under their arm to keep it topped up with scalding hot water. Apparently it causes really high levels of esophageal cancer (throwing scalding hot water down your throat, that is). (a chimarrão says google)

That is a danger but the water shouldn't be boiling (should be around 70 deg).

More of a danger for the uninitiated is the taste. Also it is a drink you share so it is quite social (though many e.g. lorry drivers on the road, drink it alone) - danger of cross-infection?

There is a very highbrow looking new café opened on Roseneath Street in Marchmont, between Eddie's Seafood and the yummy mummy shop on the corner.

Forget the name but it's main premise is having your coffee surrounded by photography in otherwise spartan surroundings.

I used to get mate teabags from RealFoods. Never quite went for the loose leaf with the gourd, pampas grass straw etc

They used to sell tea called "Rocket Fuel" when I was at uni which was tea fortified with caffeine.

Or you could just put a second teabag in...
