I and a couple of my fellow cyclists stopped in at a new café called the Pastures on Marchmont Crescent. A couple of us had soup du jour, Scotch broth and also stovies. Both were very good, and served with some crusty bread. Lots of carbs, just what you need. The place is a little bijou so can't take too many, about 10/15(at most) at a time. Beverages are available too, I am sure there were scones/cakes but we did not indulge. All very reasonably priced. Also of interest are the hand made handicrafts such as cards, paperweights, wood block prints, and some ceramic ware. It is right next door to Laid Back bikes if you need somewhere after your tour or even to have a discussion about possibly treating yourself to a recumbent...

    Couple of new Marchmont cafés

Freeman's on left is very new, first time I've noticed it. Looks very trendy. Happie Daze on right been there a few months. More down to earth.

Coffee in Freemans is brilliant, I also had some nice soup and artisanal bread - nice. Dont know much about their other food / cake options.

They have a big blackboard and chalks for kiddies to play with throught back, and some nice comfy seats.

Not much in the way of bike parking outside, a rail along the window would improve things - I suggested this to the owner a few months ago.

"A NEW community cafe has opened its doors in Balerno.

It is hoped that The Mill at St Joseph’s, which is staffed completely by volunteers, will offer a place for members of the public to meet and will raise money for projects at the St Joseph’s Centre, where the cafe is based."

Don't think this new cafe/bookshop has been mentioned.

Controversially just round the corner from PY.

@cb: don't tell anyone! (Shesh! I love that cafe :) but want it kept secret :) good coffee, more bookshop than cafe maybe?

@gembo: We tried out lovecrumbs a few months ago. Seem to remember coffee was good, but the place was, um.. missing something... difficult to say. Let us know what you think:)

Yeah, that's kinda what I thought (tried it for the first time last week). The cakes are good too, but there's just something not quite right. However, the free wi-fi is quick; slightly off-putting the trendy studenty types (from the Art College?).

Can't see the picture of the new one - is it Pulp Fiction that's near there? I was actually aiming for that, but all tables were taken, when I then found myself in Lovecrumbs.

EDIT: or 'more bookshop than coffee' - there's a place near PY I saw a month or so back that would fit that bill?

FURTHER EDIT: I really need to read further back ni threads before posting.

I think Cafe Artista has closed - has it?

My recommendation, from extensive research in East Lothian, is the cafe in the old walled garden at Smeaton near East Linton. I think Dave C once recommended it and I have seen Porto Velo there as well.

Suspect you're thinking of one opposite - Black Medicine.

Going to be part if new Sainsbury.

One thing I miss from down in England are the "mobile" roadside transport cafés - they're very common where I was brought up, but not so much here - there's one at Ferny Ness, and a few on the industrial estates, but I don't see many others out of town - if anyone comes across one or knows of others, please let me know.

You can get a coronary in a bun and tea strong enough to stand a spoon for a few pennies...mmmm

Indeed, we were there yesterday. I can vouch for their excellent scones.
I quite like the cafe in Gifford. It's friendly and they're not precious if a large group of cyclists turn up covered in muck/soaking wet. Their bacon baguettes have fuelled me home on several occasions.

Bridge 49 handy for jaunts out along the canal.

It felt similar to the Park Bistro (mentioned upthread), also on the canal but this side of Linlithgow.

The Pastures of course is good value with home baking. Some seats outside when summer comes. Plus some nearby bike racks in Marchmont Crescent put in by CEC.

Cafe 39 on Argyle Place is now the Meadowlark - Yoga and bike friendly cafe. Not tried it yet.

Looking Glass is nice for smaller groups - not big enough to take 'road clubs' (few places are).

Hula in Victoria St is a nice independent business in the old town and has a top rating by the List. (Daughter works there and even allowing for family bias it is good. Lots of smoothies and healthy stuff (!) Good coffee - the staff go to Artisan for training).

The Beach House in Portobello is excellent.

Cafe at Silverknowes is a nice stop too.

Spotted a new cafe in Viewforth Street the other day, on the same side and just uphill from the high school.

    Can't remember the name though...

We should go for a cafe crawl. It may require the use of suitable (elastic) clothing.

Someone should do a calorie calculation to determine how many miles we need to ride between cafes to burn of that slice/slab (depending on cafe) of carrot cake.

If you can get in for the buggies... ;)

FYUL in Bread Street is kinda cool - I like it (and there's good free wi-fi).

The cafe at Archerfield looked good, with good parking, and with the space, and nice location if I was in the area I'd probably go for it before Konditormeister in Gullane now...

Gosford Bothy farm shop is good for the odd slice of cake (or two)

EddieD - Dumfries may be a bit too far to ride for a bacon roll but there are a couple of those mobile ones around us (a fairly permanent one on the A75 at our roadend and two on the nearest industrial estate that I know of).

Given the dearth of suitable cycling-to cafes around here, especially in the winter, I have pondered the economics and logistics of having a mobile cafe that could pitch up at a different beauty-spot-where-a-cafe-is-sorely-needed every weekend, advertising its presence via facebook and/or twitter. I'm sure it would clean up...

    @WC: "Konditormeister in Gullane"

I pressed my nose up against the window on Saturday. Looked very inviting - open fire, buns etc.

There are quite a few cafes on the road out to N Berwick.

There's a nice cafe in Fisherrow Harbour.

Saison in Musselburgh has great views and is useful for bird watchers but is slightly weird.

I want to try the one in Cockenzie House.

There one in Longniddry in the WI shed.

There's the Gosford one previously mentioned and also the pub in Aberlady at a pinch.

Two in Gullane - one old fashioned and one exorbitant

    One at Fenton Barns (still?)

    Archerfield - to be tested

One in Dirleton that I must try out again

In N Berwick - loads - notably though the seabird centre
