Also - following CTC guidance there are quite a few around East Linton
- Smeaton nursery as mentioned by Tom - nice on a warm day.
- Tyninghame - alway good cake (gorgeous succulent brownie) - and avoided by the CTC
- two in E Linton not tried
CityCyclingEdinburgh was launched on the 27th of October 2009 as "an experiment".
IT’S TRUE!
CCE is 15years old!
Well done to ALL posters
It soon became useful and entertaining. There are regular posters, people who add useful info occasionally and plenty more who drop by to watch. That's fine. If you want to add news/comments it's easy to register and become a member.
RULES No personal insults. No swearing.

Happy to do a cafe run out to Gosford Bothy for more research! (favourite of mine too).
Great, just the thread I was looking for.
On the subject of East Lothian, the garden centre at East Fortune has a very acceptable cafe.
There's also one at the air museum but we found it a bit pricey and full of kids.
Closer to home the garden centres at Riccarton and Mortonhall also have very acceptable cafes.
CH: "the garden centre at East Fortune has a very acceptable cafe"
Merryhatton? The CTC seem to like that one.
This does sound like a good excuse for a CCE ride!
Yes, Merryhatton, that's probably it
I do like cafes where the risk of theft is minimal, e.g. you can park the bike in plain view, lock it up to something secure (e.g. cafe in Innerleithen), or tuck it away (cafe in West Linton).
Don't think it's been mentioned:
The Secret Herb Garden, Pentland Road (between Hillend and Ikea)

Website under construction but more info on their facebook page:
"Wonderful herb nursery on the outskirts of Edinburgh with a cafe, shop, vintage furniture and bees."
Haven't been but passed in the car today.
Is that where Damhead vegetable place is?
Not a very good way to keep it 'secret' though. . .
@goliath, precisely Aidan moffat's point about the secret bunker in fife in the song he guest vocals on the album concubine rice by lone pigeon of the fence collective
Not a very good way to keep it 'secret' though. . .
We lived in the farm across the road from it during the late sixties and early seventies and in the nearby village of Crail until it was decommissioned. It really was secret then. No-one knew what it was or if they did they didn't let on. It was only when my neighbour, a retired telephone engineer, told me in the mid-eighties he had been in it that we had any idea of its size and importance.
Still two pounds for espresso and rhubarb pie in the apple pie bakery of Carnwath. A few cyclists out this morning as it was quite icy earlier but mostly gone now.
I wonder if the far flung cafes of west Lothain etc have felt any lift from the increase in cycling? Apple pie bakery had twenty plus cyclists the last time I was there but just me today.
The red barn at elsrickle brought out two portable bike racks for us when we were there in early December.
I tried to get to the Apple Pie Bakery on Sunday. After an hour and a half I'd got to the West Calder turnoff. So I turned round and let the wind take me home.
Cafes that often have bikes outside - The Whistlestop, Innerleithen; Love Coffee, Gifford; The Old Smiddy, Tyninghame; The Goth, Prestonpans; Saddlers, Dunbar. Konditormeister's in Gullane will have good cakes but I've not been in. The wee cafe in Ormiston went out of business I think.
Morningside Kitchen at the bottom of Morningside Drive now seems to be open. Think it's more of a restaurant than a cafe but looks like it might cater for the cake and coffee crowd too.
Don't know if it's been mentioned on the previous pages but Cockenzie House is well worth a visit with genuine home-baked fare and you're contributing to something local.
And, for those of a more discerning nature, real china cups.

Cargo is gone, but here's the cool thing that's going to replace it: http://edinburgh.stv.tv/articles/319894-akva-swedish-bar-opening-in-former-cargo-by-canal-at-edinburgh-quay

Akva will open its doors in June with the team behind five of the city’s known spots, Boda, Sofi’s, Victoria, Joseph Pearce’s and Hemma, bringing a taste of Sweden to the Union Canal.
I haven't heard, let alone entered, any of these establishments. I am getting old....
“All the furniture comes from Sweden and it will have a mix of furniture."
So Ikea then?
Hmm. I went to Cargo once, in 2006. Can't say I'd noticed it being shut on my infrequent lunchtime wanders-past. Will Akva have better coffee and less-dry cakes than nearby Loudons?
Victoria used to be our local when we lived on Balfour Street. Now that we have two little ones, coffee/lunch at Hemma at the weekend is a very pleasant experience as there are lots of toys and space for them. Seems that Akva is going to be similar to Hemma during the day and, for us, is more accessible by bike.
ooh, that could be good.
PY west?
Main problem with that site is that the outside space doesn't get enough sun and can be 'draughty'.
Sofi's is a lovely wee bar on Henderson Street, just before the Shore. It has a great community feel to it - they have film nights, knitting nights etc etc. I don't often go out drinking, but when I do it's the place I gravitate to.
