We used to go to Cargo semi-regularly - not because we liked the place, but because we liked the walk along the canal and (sometimes) sitting outside at the end.

Agree about the outside seating being in the wrong place. The building on the left as you look down the canal with your back to Cargo is the one you want to open a cafe with lots of outside seating in...

"The building on the left as you look down the canal with your back to Cargo is the one you want to open a cafe"

Slightly surprised that didn't 'just happen' it was underused for years.

Suspect rent was high and/or restrictions on use because of Cargo site.

Hmmm. I've only ever had coffee there once and it tasted like it had been deep fried.

They've weirdly won many many prizes in the barista challenges. I think it's the owner that wins rather than the staff!

I've only had coffee a couple of times in Kilimanjaro and it was about the best I've ever had in the city.

As an enforced-decaf drinker, I often get pretty ropey brews. But I'd especially recommend COW (coffee on Wooer St) in Falkirk. The coffee was great - fresh ground, a great rarity in the decaf world. There was also good food and a friendly atmosphere.

Falkirk is worth visiting for many other reasons of course. (Antonine Wall, Callendar House & park, Falkirk Wheel, Kelpies & park, Leckies ....)

@amir Try the decaf offered by Hula on Victoria St - somehow it was much tastier than their full-fat stuff.

I can't remember what I thought of Kilimanjaro's coffee as they put themselves on the list with a brownie containing stealth lumps of nut. Victor Hugo does nice Union coffee but its owner-or-manager-or-whatever put his premises on the list too by parking his stupid SUV in a stupid place then bullying the traffic warden who duly recorded it. Relish and Rock Salt used to be good but have let themselves down with the last cup of take-away coffee I had from each.

Of coffee shops? Only eight or nine items.

Getting back on topic the hot chocolate from the cafe in the National Library of Scotland on George IV is the best I've had in a long time.

I popped into the cafe in the Humbie Hub with cyclingmollie at the weekend after seeing the Tornado at Borthwick. This is a lovely cafe - beautifully fitted and well placed for the cyclist. Great cake! Well recommended.

For the more urban-minded, Poddington's Coffee House is really nice at Straiton. A great escape from car-dominated consumerism.

The runner up was Poddington’s Coffee House on Straiton Mains, Loanhead, while third place went to The Haven Cafe in Anchorfield.

On the Erit Lass audax this weekend, there were so many cyclists at the Whistlestop in Innerleithen that we got bumped to the next one. But that was a a stroke of good fortune. No 1 Peebles Rd is a fantastic little cafe. I had decaf, tomato/coriander soup and carrot cake and they were all delicious. The soup was nice and thick with big chunks of bread on the side. The cake had a proper sweet/sour topping. The coffee was the best decaf I've had for ages - they seem to take special effort with the coffee.

Latest cafe news from Cramond and Silverknowes

The new Boardwalk Beach Club cafe will be very nice when it opens.

Went Cramond Falls Cafe today. New entrance now with ore seating indoors. Very nice freshly baked hot fruit scones. Good service. More expensive than the Apple Pie but what isn't?

Probably worth mentioning The Lodge Coffee House at the entrance to the Hermitage on Braid Road.

We were at Gorgie Farm on Saturday morning before having to retreat in the face of the advancing snow and sleet.

The Salt Yard café proved to be our sanctuary (between Maplin and Dalry School).

It appears to be arms-length run by the Gorgie-Dalry Church and someone has spent a good amount of money and effort sprucing the place up (I think it used to be a sort of Old Folks' Club / drop-in centre type place). Reasonably priced, good soup, friendly service, big portions.

Good too if you have nippers with you as there's a fenced off play area you can abandon them in let them play about in whilst they remain under full control and supervision.

There is also a "contemplation room"; having had a bit too much of the good Malt the night before I was heartily tempted to retreat into it's peaceful, low-lit sanctuary but that wouldn't have gone down well with the rest of the family.

I thought that the Boardwalk cafe would have been open by now. It's been fully fitted out for months. Problems getting staff, a license or just waiting for better weather?

The Falls Cafe is really nice, although service is slightly shambolic.

@kaputnik: haven't been into Salt Yard but Dalry is getting spruced up generally and has a number of good cafes now. Perhaps in response to the developments at Fountainbridge and Haymarket?

Also in Gorgie is this place:
    https://greenshootsedinburgh.com/
slightly tucked away almost opposite the Macdonalds (but a little further out of town). Nice coffee, cake and food. We like it.

I've never been into the Salt Yard, in spite of passing it most days.

+1 for Greenshoots - the chap serving last Sunday was as happy to discuss cycling as he was slow drip coffee brewing techniques - both topics were covered at length.

Also in the up and coming Dalry/ Gorgie cafe scene is Chapter One Coffee Shop http://www.chapterone.coffee/ I think their soup is supplied by Union of Genius - 'twas delicious anyway.

Mimi's Bakehouse due to open in Corstorphine this week. Bike racks (and an excellent LBS) nearby.

Hopefully the equally excellent Bon cafe (bike racks right outside!) nearby will still keep busy.
