    If you own an cherished bike and are looking to keep an eye on it you might like this slice of Sciennes down town at corner of George St and North Castle St.
    Local business Victor Hugo's first foray into city. Not too misérable and close to book fest - this should help it pay its rates.
    Prices - yes they have prices.

    The quite wide bike lanes on George St were popular when we were sitting there. Also saw three female teenagers on Just Eat Bikes coming off George St and heading to Rose St which they would do contraflow in the continental style.

    To clarify: Victor Hugo's prices are very reasonable for city centre. Cakes and tea were very good. Plus you are supporting an Edinburgh business (institution?). Bike racks not too far away. If your bike has kickstand and framelock then ideal.

    Didn't they briefly have a deli on Portobello High Street?
    The one in Bruntsfield does (IMO) the best pastrami sandwich in Edinburgh

    I stopped going to the Bruntsfield one when I saw someone who exuded an air of café-ownership bullying a traffic warden who was rightly addressing the huge SUV thing parked in a wrong place outside.

    Cycled to Carnwath today to get a cuppa, steak and haggis bridie plus paradise cake.
    Got carry out Apple pie and another paradise cake for the lovely route home via Dunsyre and A702.
    Total £7.70 - great value as you know @gembo - £4.70 of initial post got lost :-)

    Can vote for their quality and value here

    Any recommendations for nice cafes between here and Dundee? We're thinking of going straight up then underneath Kinross, through the Lomonds then up to Newburgh but happy to divert on the promise of an intermediate warm welcome.

    Cafe at the RSPB centre - excellent with added wildlife and a superb view.

    Oooh - a really good tip. Wouldn't have expected to find a cafe there.

    I've just noticed we're going past Pillars of Hercules later on too, think I'll keep both of them in my back pocket and make a decision on the day based on legs/wakeup time!

    Not sure I've ever seen Limmy look quite as rough as he does in that video still. Fairly comparable to how I suspect that I look for most of the recent virtual PYs but with a dressing gown instead of a hoodie...

    When did Limmy give up the bevvy? For water.

    Fifteen years ago last week I think.

    @jdanielp

    Limmy lost two years of his life to heroin and five to methadone. Methadone's worse.

    @IWRATS indeed, I read his autobiography. Quite an eye-opener.

    (I say 'indeed', but now that I think about it I don't remember him mentioning anything quite that hard - he certainly went into detail about taking a lot of drugs over the years though and drinking a ridiculous amount.)

    I haven't read it. I should. He's an absolutely fascinating character.

    Ah we were a bit stunned that morning

    I remember it well. I was in town that morning, taking some photos of trains at Waverley, and at precisely 0955 someone shouted over to me, "go back to your own country!" :-/

    @Arellcat

    Horrifying and frankly amusing. Hope you gave them several earfuls, but that kind of abuse is often so gobsmacking that you just look at them.

    @jdanielp

    That would be cool man. Thanks.

    @arellcat, how did they know you were from another country?

    I can only presume they presumed that either I was Dutch, on account of my height, or that I was taking photographs of stuff only tourists would think to photograph.

    Taking over our rail service not enough for the Dutch, was it? Now they are replacing our trainspotters as well!

    I was at Glastonbury Festival. Was awoken by groans, swears and distressed noises of tented neighbours as they checked their phones for news. Normally the most joyous place, a fog of depression lingered over the site for most of the day. Was very strange.
