It's part of this wider event on SubSaharan Africa
The Saturday event is deliberately aimed at the public, to promote SubSaharan Africa and South Asia in a “non-aid” context. On the Saturday afternoon, we have a drop in format, with fair trade stalls for some early Xmas shopping, and we also have a range of exciting speakers as part of a “mini-book festival” (ticketed events) at the same time. In the evening, we have the fabulous Rise Kagona (last of the Bhundu Boys) running into a celebratory ceilidh. All open to the public. See all public events here: http://www.scotgovinter.eventbrite.co.uk
So:
if you’re interested in books – we have Julie Davidson, talking about her best-selling book, “Looking for Mrs Livingstone” (the trials of being an 18th century explorer’s wife!)
if you’re interested in wildlife and animals, we have a world class vet who does key hole surgery on orang-utans,
if you’re into cycling, we have Mark Beaumont, cyclist, adventurer and BBC presenter – being interviewed by Jack McConnell
and if you’re a fan of the Edinburgh Mela and Scotland’s African Film festival – then we have the Behind the Scenes chat with the founders of those festivals!
And if you love African music and a bit of ceilidh – come celebrate with us!
Something for everyone we hope!

Twas very good. A whistle stop tour through his adventuring and the Africa trip.
I liked the chat about how the athletic bit was the easiest as you knew what you needed to do. The off the bike stuff - food, water & a bed were mentally the most taxing (& exciting).
Has got me pondering my next challenge...
The question is how many days to spread it over, enough to make it enjoyable but not so many that I don't get a pass for it....

Sounds good. He's always very interesting on tv/radio - much more than just a cycling talk - although I've never seen him in person.
I saw that North Coast 500 film earlier and had an urge to head up there. I didn't realise there was also a website - thanks for the link.

@hankchief how many days before you need a pass (just curious?) for me probably away Friday morning or maybe Thursday night back some point on
Sunday. Though that requires a day pass from work.I have been on cycling trips where half the party are keen to get home but the other half extend the trip (to play golf!!)
I saw mark Beaumont on George street pushing a buggy. He seems nice guy, I know his sister slightly.

@gembo missing a 2nd bath time...
Having done a 5 day 500miler this year and I think 4 days should be doable for the North Coast. 3 days would mean only 1 day off work but pretty heroic distances.

@hankchief, kids only need baths about once a week these days

Mark Beaumont was on Countryfile last night, which was covering the North Coast 500. He was cycling with the presenter up the Bealach Na Ba in snow and hail. Despite the weather, it's just made me keener to get up that part of the world with the bike.
