  1. Out of the blue last night, an old friend I lost touch with around 25 years ago contacted me via Facebook, and it reminded me why I continue to support POP and also the campaign for Presumed Liability.

Her sister, Sally Low, (who I also knew in years gone by) was killed by a driver in 2013 when out cycling.

The distraught family went through 2 years of hell before the driver eventually settled out of court. She's forever grateful to the sole witness who held Sally's hand as she died, and to Brenda at Cycle Law Scotland who took their case on.

I know I'm guilty of thinking at times that we're wasting our time, and that for all the lovely words from politicians we never see anything changing and they're just stringing us along.

But we HAVE to keep going; we owe it to those who've paid the ultimate price for our country's woeful record of investment in active travel and making the roads safer for cyclist and pedestrians. One day we will see change; the baby steps now will eventually become giant leaps.

Until that day, I'll be there at every POP.

"I know I'm guilty of thinking at times that we're wasting our time"

That's not guilt, that's a natural degree of pessimism.

Many things don't seem worth the bother - when you're half-way through...

Once again there is a Flickr group for people to add photos of THIS year's event that can be used - for free - by press, blogs etc.

Photos don't need to be added on the day, as Sally has said -

    "It's such a fantastic resource - I've used last year's countless times."

I flyered in lovely conditions on the towpath between 8-9 this morning, helped in the middle by Greenroofer. Around a quarter of the cyclists already knew about it, another third or so grabbed a leaflet in passing, but an annoying number either completely ignored me or misunderstood what I was shouting at them, one shouting back that "they had voted already". A woman shouted back to me as she cycled onto the aqueduct "What about pedal on attitude?" which I didn't really know how to interpret... All quite positive overall although I still have spare leaflets and stickers.

Hang onto any spare flyers and stickers for the day, I think

We could have done with some to hand out to passers by to explain what it was all about

Oh and we'll be handing out flags again. We'll try and provide rubber bands and/or zip ties to attach them to bikes, but the thing that really works best is tape (if you're not too precious about your paintwork). Handing out tape is a logistical nightmare so if you do want a POP flag that will stay on your bike until it dissolves in the rain, bring some of your own along (and if you are happy to share it, all the better)

I handed out a few pages of handlebar flyers on my way home last night between the Bridge and Whitehouse Road. They length of them make it easy for a cyclist to grab without stopping.

Several folk commenting on the chalk writing they've seen around town which is good. Some needed a few passes to read it all though so perhaps I used too many lines.

    Sally in the Guardian:
    http://www.theguardian.com/environment/bike-blog/2016/apr/22/scottish-elections-what-would-each-party-do-to-improve-cycling

Mentions PoP nice and early in the article in case readers start skipping.

Have any of the post-event surveys recorded where attendees heard of the event, possibly in conjunction with the regularity/newness/potential of their status as a cyclist? Just wondering if there's a particular channel more likely to attract new/returning cyclists, or a method more likely to get established cyclists to turn up and so on, so that people with limited time to spend on publicity could feel they were being maximally effective.

My local Labour candidate was canvassing yesterday and said (in response to my question!) that he'd be along to the HP Feeder Ride and to the Meadows.

Great questions. The survey that is run at http://pedalonparliament.org/survey/ does ask these questions.
Last year the bulk of the people who answered the survey had attended previous PoPs, but of those who hadn't they had heard by a mixture of flyers, word of mouth, social media, CCE, media report. Similarly the small amount of people who responded that were new to, or didn't cycle often had a similar mix.
We should probably add a couple of survey options for handlebar flyers and chalking.

Whilst it's worn away by the passage of the very traffic we're trying to encourage chalk underfoot-or-wheel feels less easy to not notice than posters-on-path-lamp-posts.
I've noticed that a disappointing quarter of the posters I mounted have already disappeared, at least two of which were definitely through deliberate action as they were firmly-attached and out of the wind. Someone else did the handlebars of bikes at work this year but a lot of the flyers are just lying on the ground beside the racks (though they seemed to be just poked behind cables, not looped/fastened). At least six of my waterproof pedestrian-crossing-button-pole-loop-flyers are gone, possibly through a combination of wind/rain versus double-sided tape but probably through malicious intervention, and they're what I was hoping would be spotted by lots of potential-cyclist pedestrians.

By the way, if anyone is planning on going along any cycle paths likely to be used by PoP-attendees this afternoon or evening or tomorrow morning (or if you're leading or reconnoitring a feeder ride) and has access to any sort of brush, please consider spending a couple of minutes to brush away any noticeable patches of glass, lest thousands of new/returning cyclists are put off by punctures. There were a couple of bottle-smashes next to the grass on the south bit of MMW this morning.

@wingpig @sallyhinch this is the first year i've seen a lot of complaint about posters/chalk (one year we just had a lot taken down through admin 'thoroughness').

think we'll need to reconsider if we do it again.

I put up a lot fewer posters, and did less chalking, but more complaints.

    :(

Boyfriend of Fimm says he's coming!!!!
He must love me very much xxxxx

He seems to think that 1) 8 year olds should man up and take the lane and 2) even if that is not going to happen, campaigning for things to change isn't going to change anything.

(No, I am not volunteering him to marshal. It is enough that he says he's going to show up.)

I have seen at least one twitter complaint about "graffiti" on the path. Wait 'til these people see what it's like when the election gets going, or when the Fringe really kicks off. In contrast that chalk won't last a single downpour I suspect.
