Brilliant day - huge thanks and congratulations to the organisers and I hope you are relaxing and enjoying a suitable reward.

Was great to get such a big turnout from the Corstorphine/Roseburn feeder - must have been approaching 100. I liked the attitude we took at the junctions - smile nicely but very firm that we were crossing safely, even if it meant cars had to wait. Struck me that the same number of people in cars would probably have caused as big a delay.

Nice to meet some more of you, and I'm sure I passed even more forumites without knowing.

Alison Johnstone absolutely nailed her speech.

Big thank you to the organisers for another superbly run event. Seemed busier than last year, despite the cold wind. Really liked the T-Shirts as well and mine will be getting many an outing in the coming year. Speeches were better than expected and I hope that there will be some substance behind this.

As far as this parish is concerned, ran into fimm (recognisable because of Brompton and Harrison Park feeder flag-mentioned that she wiuld help on that thread) and picked up Tshirt from Hankchief. Also briefly joined a few guys who were talking about the taxi driver assault just as we arrived at Holyrood- don't know if it was anyone on here.

Another thing I noticed was that on my way in from Fife into Edinburgh I saw dozens of cyclists who weren't going to POP, more than I've ever seen at my normal cycling time of day (commute). On the way back ran into two more who hadn't heard of POP but said they'll be going next year and also Rich who had traveled down from Aberdeen to attend.

Thanks again, and already looking forward to next year.

Well done, POP HQ and Police Scotland. This was definitely the best organised one yet.

After carefully buying-and-collecting my POP2016 t-shirt in advance, I managed to forget to bring it with me today! And my two flags (POP2015 and #WCV) flapped themselves to destruction as I cycled to the designated meeting point of all things recumbent. Thanks to fimm and another helper-outer who gave me new flags at the Meadows.

Brief hellos with DaveC, fimm, unhurt, the Family Weezee, Ulli Harding, Rugg Tomcat, Mandopicker, Hankchief, gembo (splendidly attired, and with obligatory salute), some Brompton friends, and the stilts guy without whom Edinburgh would be a sadder place.

Also spotted Kaputnik and miniKaputnik, SRD, MrSRD with microSRD in tow (but didn't spot miniSRD), firedfromthecircus, Morningsider, Gandalf, and probably other people whose noms de plume I've forgotten.

@Arellcat- good call on Police Scotland - unobtrusive, good humoured and they seemed to take real care of the the large party of kids leaving post event and heading up Queens Drive towards the Commonwealth pool.

The (bike) mounted officers I saw looked like they were thoroughly enjoying themselves.

Anyone technical enough to turn this into a GIF?

    Strava Flyby

There may be some more people to upload to Strava or they didn't pass me close enough to register - but still a good spread of routes.

Very late to express this but huge thanks to all those who organised, promoted, marshalled and advertised POP. It was a great success I thought - best one so far for us. The most salient moment for me was as we all left to go home just as the roads reopened and that brief hour or so of idyllic quiet and calm suddenly reverted to normal and the slight panic set in again as we wrestled the cars again with all the trailers etc....

Great pleasure to see IWRATS and Madame IWRATS and briefly say hello to SRD, Chrisfl, fimm and a speculative hello to jdanielp and shuggiet...

Relatively pleased with 3h 40m George Sq-Meadows on newly raised gearing, and the benefit of riding clipless (SPD) only had 2 'walks' (stopped at lights on hill in Airdrie and Torphichen Street).

Really should have looked out for HankChief and Morningsider for a quick chat, but caught up with Roy to learn about fitting tandems on coaches, and Bill Brockie quietly lurking.

What really is amazing is how you can assemble c 4000 folk and the disperse them without gridlock and associated frustration, and leave not a trace afterwards. Something a few more major events might consider?

    Another great POP.

Running a feeder ride was a new experience for me and whilst a couple of sleepless nights in the run up, all went remarkably smoothly.

My thanks to Claire, Stickman & Biketrain for coordinating it with me. ACSimpson got roped in to hand out flyers to bemused passersbys.

A great turnout both for the Feeder and the main event. We had our Labour Holyrood candidate with us on her first urban cycle which was great to see.

And don't worry, I've tweeted Frank with a picture of Russell Road fill with constituents on bikes...

P.s. Don't forget to add you photos to the main Flickr Group

P.p.s. thanks to Arellcat for letting MicroChief have a look at the Red Torpedo, she was very impressed.

@tulyar did Bill Brockie come all the way to Holyrood or did you mean lurking at the Meadows? he came in from Harrison Park with us, but I think didn't plan to ride all the way.

    "Very late to express this"

    Not at all.

Plenty people still recovering/thinking about it.

See previous post for evidence that PoP 'works' for people who are not already 'us'.

The fact that she is a politician is irrelevant here - but might be good for the future.

Whatever people's views on parties/politics it's worth noting that both Labour (some individuals at least) + Greens 'get it', SNP much less so - which could make next year's CEC election interesting/difficult.

Many thanks to all of your who came to support, and a special thanks to all those from this parish who were marshals as well! It's vital that we have people moving through and keeping people going and also helping people to realise that the timetable is written on the back of the flag!

The police are always super happy to be there. The Sergeant in charge was a very nice chap who was very accommodating, they chose to keep Horse Wynd closed longer than they had to because there were so many people chatting and enjoying the quiet atmosphere. I thought that was pretty cool of them!

As ever the council were pretty helpful and we're not "establised" enough that apart from a minor reprimand for not attending a meeting they told me I didn't need to attend (licensing hearing) they were very supportive, this is due to the fact that we're always pretty organised which I get the impression is relatively rare.

Numbers wise, we had many marshals moving along the queue this year packing people in to create a more solid mass. Last year we didn't do this and the queue towards the back was far more loose. Despite this the queue went further back than ever before AND was packed tighter, so I'm confident to say that we had a larger total number than previous years. Also at least a 1-200 or so extra riders joined at the front during the 40 minutes it took us to get off the meadows as their mini feeder riders were late in.

All in all a successful day and noone died so I did my job!

Once again I thought it was great in so many ways.

I had previously thought that this should be the 'last' and somehow next year there should be local 'pedal on councils'.

Probably work in Edinburgh, but perhaps not elsewhere.

It 'happened' again - with LOTS of chalking, flyering, marshalling etc. from a host of people (many happen to be CCEers!).

But at the core there is a dogged handful of people working on aspects throughout the year.

I'm not a 'PoP insider' - I just take some photos - but I presume it would help if people said they expected to be willing/able to do the same (or more) as this year.

This year the feeder rides brought in more people than before, the two police people I talked to at the King's junction were happy to be involved.

If there is a PoP6, perhaps more planning/co-ordination for feeder rides (and more flags of course!) and maybe some return rides leaving 15 mins after end of speeches(?)

Maybe t-shirts available earlier and some sold/distributed via local/feeder groups?

I wandered around the outskirts of the crowd at Holyrood selling the last t-shirts and could easily have sold more. The problem is that we never dare order too many shirts, but I do think that with more 'mobile sellers' we could probably sell more.

"but I do think that with more 'mobile sellers' we could probably sell more."

I'm sure that would be true in The Meadows - especially if enough could be ordered to make the price £10.

Perhaps some people would be willing to buy 10 for resale (with the option to swap sizes).

This year's design was so attractive it should sell 'all year round'. (Good quality shirt too.)

Perhaps a fresh run without the date on the back - maybe 'available at selected bike shops'.

What did people make of the speeches? I confess to being underwhelmed by the commitment from the SNP to match the 'record' levels of funding. Good that he came, better that he arrived on a bicycle but the message struck me as being a little like 'have a few more crumbs from the rather large pie'. Signs from other parties that they might actually get it and if the Greens return with more MSPs, they'll hammer on at the next government.

Every year we say we should get the POP t-shirts organised well in advance, and do more to sell them on a wider scale and every year we are defeated by various factors, not least the way in which POP is organised (some would say not organised ...) which means timely decisions about things like t-shirt designs are quite difficult to make. Angela (this year's t-shirt supremo) did an amazing job of negotiating this and I think (as do many people) that they're the best yet.

Plans for POP6 are under discussion. If anyone is interested in being more involved let us know. You will need a high tolerance for email traffic, a good sense of humour, and a low-maintenance partner. No pay (you even have to buy your own t-shirts) but for one Sunday a year you will be able to relax in the knowledge that you have achieved something towards making Scotland a cycle-friendly country

Oh and yes, we fell down on the unfeeder rides, which we ran last year and didn't think about this year. We really need to document what is involved in running a POP so these things don't slip through the net

I'm not sure if we 'forgot' or just didn't have the capacity. Basically, if no one volunteers to lead one, they don't happen. Just like the feeders.

"timely decisions about things like t-shirt designs are quite difficult to make"

The 'simple' solution to that would be to re-use the current design.

No pressure to come up with/agree on an even better design.

There are THOUSANDS of PoPgoers who have never bought a t-shirts.

Maybe have a different colour next year (black is good...)

Maybe a limited edition version with all 5/6 dates on the back!

"We really need to document what is involved in running a POP so these things don't slip through the net"

I'm sure that would be useful for 'internal use', but would also highlight the amount of work/'jobs'/details/ideas involved - which might make it easier for people to say 'I could do/help with that'.

    Suggestions -

    (PoPGroup) decide a t-shirt strategy.

(Feeder ride leaders/helpers) have a group 'de-brief' - sunny pub garden(?) sometime and exchange experiences/ideas and produce a simple 'how we did it guide'. Also consider if there are extra starting points/routes that should have rides.

After yesterday there is more experience about how long rides take with varied levels of riders (age/experience) and the benefits (or not) of 'picking up people at points along the way'.

The Corstorphine + Roseburn ride didn't quite catch the Harrison Park one, but the police were happy to deal with both at the King's.

So that was an excellent day. As ever, I find that if you're busy helping you get less of a buzz on the day, but more of a glow afterwards. I'm pretty sure there was nothing more useful that we could have done with Saturday than what we did. It was unalloyed good. Great to see a gaggle CCEers too - greenroofer, jdanielp, gembo, morningsider, weezee, unhurt and especially algo and the algae.

If I reflect on the idea of PoP I find myself obliged to consider that we could now start measuring its success against the manifesto. It has uses which aren't included there of course - notably giving a great boost to cycle activists all round Scotland and wider afield - but that's four years now and we'd ideally be noticing transport cycling becoming less niche, less stressful and more common.

    I think we should keep doing it. I think we should reflect on what will take it up a gear. Few will be susprised to learn that I have ill-conceived thoughts on the matter;

    1) PoP is, by accent snooping, very middle class. Will there ever be feeder rides from Granton, Wester Hailes and Danderhall? PoP will fail if it is seen as primarily concerning the ability of Octavia and Blair to cycle safely from Merchiston to Watsons.
    2) It's councils that make the little decisions that make a big difference to our trips. Should we thread a needle through all 32 authorities next time and pull it tight somehow?
    3) Ours is a niche interest. Scottish politics has been turned upside down since PoP1 and active travel wasn't and isn't the main issue. But we know that health and wealth can both be increased just by walking. Can we hook into the new politics? A friend of mine said that in the wake of 2014 he has reassessed everything in his life. What we're looking for is to overturn hegemonic automobile culture and that's a stiff challenge, but Scotland is a country that's asking itself some guy muckle questions. The SNP are caught on the horns of wanting to be seen as competent and conservative (normal, they just want to be seen as normal) whilst having a horde of wildly radical members and one wildly radical policy. If as seems likely they do form the next government - how do we help them to see us as useful to them? That's what will advance our ideas.

Lastly - many thanks to the team that initiated this thing. PoP was necessary but it was not inevitable and your drive and vision has made the world incrementaly better.

@SRD Bill was lurking and I suspect under instructions on the limits of exertion, Jenny was off at another event. Great to see him there though, and he headed back shortly before 12.00.

Clan-SRD flew by as I was heading round to catch @arellcat & those in the 'upper circle' from the 'stalls' but you all seemed intently focussed on going home.

    1. Octavia & Blair's parents are more likely to vote than Wester's and Hailes's parents. The government in Scotland is likely to be the SNP for the forseeable future - and they are opportunists. They have no qualms at all about sucking up to the middle-classes.
    2. Wester's and Hailes's parents seem to have been captured by the SNP for a generation anyway.
    3. Bloke from Niddrie did stop at the Spokes stall with a question about infrastructure.

"how do we help them to see us as useful to them?"

    Very useful question.

It's hard to know how well 'outside groups' will fit/operate with the revised climate on lobbying. Not that PoP is about to have paid staff to do that sort of thing.

I think (hope) that there are now more people willing to do more than just turn up for a "demo" once a year - whether that's email politicians, join local organisations or start campaigns (or help with PoP!).

The way things seem at the moment (pre-election) is 'if you don't vote for us twice you don't really want the best for Scotland'.

I paraphrase heavily, and lump all SNP members/politicians/and some potential voters together there.

Assuming (as seems likely) the Greens get 7 or more seats, I think it would be wise for the SNP to offer Government roles (no idea if the Greens would accept). But there seems to be a remarkable degree of animosity, which presumably dates back to when the SNP needed the Greens for a majority - and then discovered it didn't.

Imagine Andy Wightman shaping policies on land reform or Alison Johnstone involved in Health or Transport.

If that's too 'radical', at least being in charge of more influential scrutiny committees.

If the SNP really wants Independence (which it does) it should be willing to see Greens as allies (after the election at least). In conventional left/right terms (which is not entirely appropriate) 'most' Green voters are probably more 'left wing' than 'most' SNP supporters. But they (and other parties too!) want "the best for Scotland".

Whether that's with Independence, more dual carriageways or fracking is (literally) debatable.

More of the same (in or out of EU/UK) doesn't seem like enough. Safer streets, more enjoyable/healthier ways of getting around hardly seem like dangerously radical ideas - and might well be highly cost effective - even using conventional economics.

Back to "how do we help them to see us as useful to them?" -

Well actually they are meant to be our "representatives", maybe they should think more about they could be useful to "us"!

I want to add my thanks (before it's waaaay too late) to everyone who organised and helped with this fantastic event. It was a joyous occasion with a serious intent.

It was my first PoP, the first that I could have attended tbh. I was very impressed and I promise to help next time.

Also impressed that it is attracting significant politicos which is the main purpose.

I thought the speeches were good, thankfully short and focused, but they conveyed the parties' policies quite well. They helped me make up my mind for May 5th. In my opinion, the ranking for active travel policy was (good to p*** poor), Green, Labour, Lib Dem, Tories, SNP, which is not necessarily the ranking I would give them on wider policy. They must realise that if so many people, people who will vote if they're 16+, can be bothered to get out with such a positive message, they'd better do some listening.

    Thanks again to the organisers.
