    I bought a bottle of beer while waiting for my daughter to get her books signed at a recent meet the author event in Edinburgh. It cost an eye-watering £4.50. Is that normal?

    @Cyclingmollie

    Depends what the beer was!

    Just as with wines and any other drink, there is a whole range of beer from the swill to the extremely exclusive...

    I have no problem paying £4.50 for a beer from a small or local producer. What I do take issue with is paying £4.50 for a bottle of Carling.

    They weren't displaying a price list which is illegal if I recall my bar work days (Skol or Castlemain XXXX was the lager choice where I worked, Tetley's bitter if you wanted to go upmarket).

    I'm talking about the Assembly Roxy not Summerhall btw.

    Price list often displayed in bars of my west coast youth on a black plastic board that had parallel grooves to slot letters and numbers into, either white red or yellow digits and letters. One of theses pubs has been sold by the owner as his son is a dentist? The owner inherited from his father but life goes on.

    I bought 3 pints of very nice local beer at the Guildford last night and was indeed a bit taken aback when it came to £13

    I had a very nice pint of Tight Head (from Inveralmond) for just £2.50 from my local.

    I do remember being stunned when buying pints in London for nearly £2 when the price in Northern England was far less than £1. That wasn't in the last year though :)

    I can remember when the price of a pint in the city centre hit £2.00. i was about 19 and was the first hint of the passing of time and sense of my own mortality.

    Sad times.

    When the £2 coin came out we used to call them beer tokens as you could buy a pint with one almost anywhere.

    Not long ago there was outrage in the student union when the price of drinks went from £1.70 to £2.10. Edinburgh was one of the more expensive unions already, with others having pound a pint nights...

    Also - £5.90 for a pint of Caledonian 3 Hop at London City Airport!!
