Roseburn - Canal link (new Dalry route)

@Morningsider: So it wasn't just my memory playing tricks on me, then. That's good to know. Streetview has blurred a number of the road signs along there for some unaccountable reason, which might explain why I thought the shared use ones weren't there.

The downside being that the existence of the shared use path might very likely put paid to HAGSA's more ambitious proposal for that stretch.

Delighted to confirm that @Edinburgh_CC have instructed the architects to review current proposals for the Roseburn cycle link to optimise the protection of existing biodiversity and habitat. Looking forward to supporting a high-quality active travel link for our local area.

Have also asked officers to explore the options for including colourful, engaging public artworks on site making this an inspiring public space for the whole community! #GorgieDalry #Park

That sounds a lot like square one, throwing away 5 years of design and consultation.

Might speed things up as there is now more attention on it, so harder to ‘get lost’.

    Maybe.

I do like that HAGSA are pushing for changes to Russell Road. The things they suggest (or other meaningful interventions) could be delivered much faster than anything in the current plans.

Timings just wrong? If only Hagasa joined the party 5 years back rather than arriving just as we were taking the fairy lights down

In my challenge to Balerno moaners I was trolled by a person claiming to not like cycling in a bollarded lane. I don’t think she was a cyclist but if she was she was not helpful.

“claiming to not like cycling in a bollarded lane“

    High class gutters in Balerno?

    (ANY new lanes in Balerno?)

@Rob - the changes to Russell Road are a nice idea, but to say they could be delivered much faster? After another 5 years of consultation and submissions?

There were some plans a while ago for student flats in the area. I don't know what's happened to them.

I suspect the highly industrial nature of the area, with train depots, cleansing departments and an industrial estate, would not make "placemaking" much of a priority.

To be fair it does feel odd to ride in a bollarded lane. I'm just not used to it and I do feel a touch constrained. Pretty sure I'll get the hang of it, though you do seem to have to slow down a bit.

@Rosie I was thinking of a spaces for people trial implementation. Either their solution with temporary traffic lights or a closure using planters. The council have been able to get similar things setup within weeks.

@iwrats, polite of you to be nice to a Susan no facts please I’m Tory Weber Troll

    No new lanes in Balerno

The only lane I can think of goes from my house down to WoL path turn. Not been parked in that much lately.

Kids use the pavements. I don’t blame them.

WoL Path is a great asset.

When the comedian Sean Lock worked on building sites he stuck out a bit like a sore thumb. Read books, was mildly left of Centre. Liberal type. The builders called him Susan. Morning Susan, pass that monkey wrench please Susan etc. he eventually snapped and went on a bit of a rant about how very wrong it was for them to call him Susan. Passionate argument et cetera. The builders were cowed.

Next day he was walking on to the site and they were lined up either side of the road waiting for him. They burst into song - If you knew Susie like I knew Susie.

The bollarded lane on Duddingston Road has the inner slopey edge of the speed cushions protruding into the lane, increasing the constrained feel. I slow down in the bollarded/wanded lanes anyway, as hitting either a kerb or an Orca at a shallow angle is never a good idea.

Works to commence on 11th January 2021

Works will commence on-site on the package of enabling works on 11 January 2021 and this is due to be completed by early April 2021. These works are being undertaken by Balfour Beatty to validate the design and to establish ground conditions. The project is essentially divided into three separate sections – Sauchiebank, Duff Street and Dalry Park and the proposed enabling works will be undertaken across all of these.

The works require the felling of 61 trees to gain access to the areas to be investigated. The outcomes of the ground investigation works, which include trial pits and boreholes to establish soil conditions and properties, are expected to be available by mid-April 2021. Investigations will also be undertaken to establish whether there are any ground contamination issues.

Further trial pits are being undertaken to confirm the locations and depths of underground utilities apparatus and to identify any potential issues that may arise from this. The removal of Japanese Knotweed, identified previously, will be undertaken later as part of the main works.

It came through the Evil Cycling Lobby communication channels...

Put your ear to the ground on NEPN during the full moon, you'll hear all kind of stuff...

(...that then turns up in an email to/from Community Councils)

@Hankchief - so the "Sauchiehall Wood" thing wasn't taken up?

Not sure. If they find something untoward with the ground survey then they must be able to replan the route so I assume all options are still on the table.

Seems a lot just for access.

“so the "Sauchiehall Wood" thing wasn't taken up?“

    Clearly not much.

Although the campaign make a big deal of the wood being 50 years old I would assume many of these 61 trees are far younger. Compared to the many hundreds which are being removed for the route 61 is less than 10%.

Sounds like the fuss all went away here with a few soothing words from the council, but in London they have come up with a blunter approach to greenwashed NIMBY campaigns.

I'm on the radical (check the etymology) wing of this movement.

All trees should be destroyed, root and branch.

@rosie, Pun of The Day to you. Won’t be beaten before close of play this evening so can declare early.

Some trees are apparently bad. Putting in a conifer plantation for timber is at best carbon neutral (today’s made up fact)
