Roseburn - Canal link (new Dalry route)

I emailed roseburntounioncanal@edinburgh.gov.uk last Friday about the missing kerb and for a temporary cold tar ramp in the meantime. No reply as of yet.

Why does the Council keep building substandard infrastructure?
It isn't here. The footway is around 2m now (the minimum) and, given the use of Russell Road by larger vehicles, the lanes need to be >=3.25m. This leaves the ~2.2m remaining for the cycleway.

2.2m for a bidirectional, key (high volume), cycling route is definitely substandard. The absolute minimum for such a route is 3m, with 4 to 5m being desirable.

Alternatively, there could be a minimum 2m footway, a minimum 3m cycleway, leaving 5.7m for carriageway. Not wide enough for two lorries to pass, so a light-controlled shuttle system needs to be introduced. Better still, 2m, 4m and 4.7m respectively. Transport hierarchy respected.

That road was shut for over a year to build the tram bridge, then six months for maintenance on the main line, and then there was a one way restriction when they built the flats on the corner further up. They could just have stopped it up permanently for about £10k

And even if they insist on keeping it open, surely given ped volumes on the route - which have never seemed very high - a 4.2m shared path would be a better option. I normally don't care for them anywhere except rural routes, but I'd rather weave around an occasional ped than repeatedly go head-on with other cyclists with no margin for error.

@Yodhrin - agreed. Particularly as project images show the rest of the route as a 4m-wide shared surface. The NEPN and Canal, which this route links, are also shared - so this seems an odd choice.

I went by yesterday, They have at least put a drain in the lane. Agreed with others, it seems to be over engineered.

Attempting to spend the cycling budget without upsetting the drivers?

The other thing that seems to be very odd, is that there is no longer a dropped curb, making it difficult for cyclists coming from the North or those choosing to stick to the road to join the path at the zig-zag.

Am told by council officers that the missing dropped kerb at the foot of the zig zags will be reinstated.

Great to hear. But amazing that something that should be so obvious is missed.

Can someone ask Cllr Arthur why corduroy (warning) tactiles have been installed at either end of the fancy new bit of cycle lane? Should these not be the four-bar flat-topped flags, per other installations? It's almost like no-one doing the work knows the difference – or cares.

    Taxing tactiles again

Incidentally, once that dropped kerb is reinstated, be prepared for people to try parking their cars on that lovely expanse of shared footway.

Look at the state of that surface! How do the installers manage to get it so lumpy?

@Morningsider, I suspect it's hand laid and rolled, just like Leith Walk. The surface is similarly rippled and unpleasant to cycle on. Yet the CCWEL by contrast is really well laid, so perhaps it's a particular contractor at fault, and CEC not specifying how the surface is to be built.

    Yes.

Thanks, Frenchy. I didn't have my "Guidance on the Use of Tactile Paving Surfaces" document to hand earlier!

I think the end fault has to lie with the council. They are either not specifying the finish correctly or failing to enforce the finish during snagging.

The Leith Walk lanes are bordering on unusable downhill on a road bike.
My memory suggest that the contractors on the St Leonard's street lanes were forced to relay the surface when they put something like this down. Should we be lobbying SA to ensure the these lanes are similarly fixed.

I am talking about the tarmac finish here. The paving slabs are wrong and known to be dangerous so presumably can't simply be an error of specificaiton.

@acsimpson, no, we shouldn't have to lobby or be the Clerks of Works in CEC's stead, but this substandard crap will carry on if no-one points out the failings within CEC. And it clearly is carrying on.

Ultimately we are paying for this stuff, it's hard won, and we are not getting value for money.

Some quite spicy driving round my manor last night around 1930 when I wandered to the Coop.

Well over half the motons emerging from Murieston Crescent thought the "ALL TRAFFIC =>" diversion sign could not possibly apply to them.

Cue inappropriate high-speed U turns when the barriers, large crane and 4 big lorries were spotted.

One Gorgie-bound cyclist had to dive into the bollarded pedestrian bit to avoid being t-boned by one such.

@MediumDave I too was chortling at the stream of cars blithely ignoring the forest of signage and proceeding down Dalry Rd

On a later pass, an enterprising traffic control person had moved the cones right up to the Murieston Cres exit and backed it up with their car parked broadside across the road with its hazards on. ¡No pasaran!

When I saw the new cycle path width I thought what about if they removed the pavement on the other side to provide more space? It's narrow and nobody uses it with the industrial estate there...

And then I went on Street View and saw two people walking along it! (Sep 2020 images)

Boothym. Wrong thinking. When space is short, the transport hierarchy says take that space from cars.

A great view of the Roseburn to Union Canal link for walking, wheeling and cycling. It's starting to take shape! Next spring you'll see progress on the community woodlands and play park. Can you spot the new bridge beam over Dalry Road? @SustransScot http://www.edinburgh.gov.uk/roseburntounioncanal
