They have maybe changed the traffic light reaction time on the WAR already ?? Agree tight at the Telford Underpass connection and i went on the pavement on the south side to get onto Canal, I feel it starts well and ends poorly.
If I didn't want to make a right turn onto Gibson Terrace from Dundee st, I would just get off, walk across the road, and then up to Gibson terrace.
It certainly could be better but there's two close pedestrian crossings.
We spent £17million so as to never inconvenience drivers and so people on bikes could just get off and walk?
I didn't say it was a good design, or that it should have been done that way.

really? you'd rather put them in the SUV than walk across a road?
As a local resident, I also appreciate the improved parks and green space access.
Well, they haven't actually done anything to Dundee street yet. At least not for Roseburn to Canal.
Doing that's for "later" - because this is Edinburgh!
Bar a few niggles I'm reasonably happy with the new route. Absent a council administration willing to upset drivers and build significant quality on-road infra, it's the best we can likely expect and a lot more worthwhile than many previous schemes.
(I too would like to look out over Dalry Road)
I can't imagine there are many kids being given the independent mobility in the first place before the question arises of how far they should be going on the pavement as the road connection is arguably too low quality.
IMO this project was very poor value for money, compared with the original Blackford quiet route or school streets in general (e.g. it cost 4x more than SfP which delivered 40km of light segregation)
But there's no serious road reallocation offering on the table, so at least they did this instead of dialling the A9
First post in this thread only nine years ago so this has been a particulalry speedy project for Edinburgh.
2nd use last night. That step at the bottom of the why-didn't-they-make-it-just-a-little-wider bridge.... If someone hasn't ridden into that already I'd be amazed.

We’ll (probably) know on Thursday which Party/ies are notionally in charge of policies/priorities.

@frenchy @handcyclist ah spot on, was impressed by Deborah Paton when trawling through December TEC; her plaque at committee was ‘Head of Transport Strategy and Partnerships’ whereas Daisy was ‘Head of Placemaking and Mobility’, but a) I don’t know if those are different and b) job titles are [rule 2] anyway
To randomly weigh in on Canal link while I’m at it; depending on the time of day you’ll often get a gap to make it to Gibson Terrace if the pedestrian crossing to the right of the ramp to Dundee St is used by someone else; the right turn is still not much fun but it will give you the lane for a bit at least.
I often find the right turn from Dundee St into Gibson Tce difficult:
- there is often a bus at the bus stop which means you can't see oncoming traffic (when waiting on the left in the right-turn-holding-box-segregation). You either have to wait for the bus to clear, or risk get stuck in the middle with drivers not knowing that you are turning right and not simply overtaking the bus.
- there is always a lot of traffic in both directions, so much so that even if one of the pedestrians goes red and creates a gap, there is no gap in the other direction. I waited a very long time for a gap yesterday.
- going into the middle to make the right turn (as you would if no segregation) just doesn't feel safe either, as there is likely not a gap in the oncoming traffic, leaving you exposed to rear-ending, or even a head-on. Urrrrgh.
There simply is no good way to get across.
I think if I were with kids, I would get them to use the pedestrian crossing directly opposite the Telfer stepped ramp, then cycle on the very narrow pavement (on the canal side of Dundee St) to Gibson Tce. Or, ride contraflow in the bollarded lane...!

The Roseburn Link appears to have had an immediate impact on the number of people using the Roseburn path as a north-south link.
This is the Strava heat map for the last week, so only picks up people recording their journeys with a watch/phone.

Finally had a go on this. Realistically, this scheme is Sauchiebank-WAR rather than Roseburn-Canal. That section is really good - although I wonder how much cheaper it was to build the huge switchbacks than a bridge over the tram line and main railway.
The ends are poor though - nothing has been done to aid the crossing of Sauchiebank and it is a mess near Fountainbridge. Also, it took an age for the WAR crossing to change - so the near instant changes reported above look like a launch day tweak.
I think crossings of 40mph roads in Edinburgh are normally set to change when a gap in traffic is detected, or after 60s if no gap is detected in that time.
Not going to be new viewing for anyone who's ridden this, but on the 23rd I got round to re-filming the route for the 'tube — on an errand to get a paving slab — and notably the stealth step at the Telfer subway has had some yellow edges painted as seen at 3m32s through the Southbound video (second below). Not convinced it's enough, but it's a start.

Went through yesterday and saw the cones (in your video). Encouraging they haven’t gone missing (yet).
I’m sure they will before any sort of ‘improvement’ happens.
No doubt one problem is that CEC doesn’t own the step.
May not even have asked for ‘permission’ to paint it…?
No idea about ‘H&S conventions’ but might be better to have black diagonal stripes too.
Sustrans citing this lovely route [with the getting off at Haymarket feel] and indeed the Roseburn to Leith with that immediately shut and then opened 9 months later feel, In their round up of 2024 achievements.
Both routes good and i feel bad about being critical but I wouldnt want them to rest on their laurels. Daisy N has gone to the Crown Estate or something quite weird?? Place at Council too car centric???
It must be basically career ending to spend too long with CEC if you're into place making. There are very few schemes that progress at all, invariably with fatal flaws while you'd be working in a department that is removing quiet routes, Silverknowes filter etc years after rolling out

Other reports on BS and X. Basically sheet ice. Combine this with a ramped layout and falls are guaranteed.
Hopefully MMW was gritted but shame new infra wasn't. Comments of no money to do this etc of course. Prevention a lot cheaper than A&E though!
The eternal problem of separate budgets. Road maintenance doesn't get a bonus if fewer people end up in A&E.

That’s almost certainly true, but someone commented today about ‘improvements to pavement gritting’ (around Stockbridge) and wondered if CEC was reacting to claims from people slipping and breaking things.
No idea, though I thought Councils couldn’t be done for ‘weather’(?)
