The local community council (Gorgie Dalry) seem ok with the idea. There have been reports of people camping on the embankment beside Russell Road, and I get the impression cyclists would be preferable.

There are some tents there, cleverly hidden so you can only catch a glimpse of them from a bus on the Western Approach Road.

I was up on the embankment round Christmas looking to pick some greenery and came across them.

I was having a nosy to see if there have been any progress updates and saw that the full consultation report is now on the council website. I don't remember seeing this before. Without wishing to depress anyone, the Network Rail response doesn't make for good reading:

Even if the initial land clearance and business case stages are successful, the subsequent stakeholder consultation process, to gain all the required approvals, will be extremely complex, as it must be carried out with at least three separate stakeholders. Overall, this process could take 2-5 years and could be halted at any stage, if for example any of the necessary approvals or agreements with each individual stakeholder cannot be met.

    "Network Rail"

    Won't bother to read.

They have continuing form, and CEC not good at standing up to/negotiating with NR.

@Stickman Doesn't that bit of the report just refer to the possibility of a bridge over the main Edinburgh Glasgow and tram lines? Although highly desirable from 'our' pov, I'd always had that liklihood as so remote that it wasn't worth hoping for. I agree with your sentiment though (also expressed on Roseburn to Leith thread) that these projects will take a long long time.

As with ih, I've always viewed the rail/tram bridge as an optional (and extremely unlikely to proceed) extra. The rest of the report is extremely positive.

    "Won't bother to read"

    OK, jumped to relevant section.

Had assumed the problem was the 'simple' crossing of the Carstairs line.

    Does CEC have the cash?

Paper going to the next Finance committee to extend the design consultancy contract for WSP:

The Stage 2 tasks are nearing completion and it is anticipated that the Major Planning Application will be submitted later this year.

So work is still going on.

I see new fencing has appeared on Sauchiebank connecting with the existing wall on Russell Road.
Presumably trying to keep people off the embankment?

I wonder if anything is going to happen with this? I noticed last autumn that there is a very fine apple tree up on the embankment on the south side of the WAR. Munch munch.

I do hope they get on and build this (but given the delays in Canal-meadows I'm not hopeful it will be anytime soon).

Not only will it help with the Ravy-Dykes to Parly route planning I mentioned recently but also with one I got today.

Mrs Chief's friend just got a new bike and was desperate to try it out. So this morning they took to the cycle paths to Balgreen Tram Stop and back to Corstorphine for tea and cakes.

They both loved it, despite/because of the snow and they are already planning their next adventure.

The friend has asked how they can get to the canal from Murrayfield...

The friend has asked how they can get to the canal from Murrayfield...

Along the water of Leith path then up the stairs at Longstone (behind WOL visitors centre).

On the Meadows to Canal link interesting to see that the planning app for Lower Gilmore Place has been withdrawn due to 110 objections.

We've seen lots of plans for new cycle links, but I don't think any have actually started to be built. Meanwhile the cycling budget is raided to pay for road resurfacing (chesser Ave).

Whoop whoop... designs coming soon... Drop in session next week.

    "
WSP are holding a consultation event on behalf of Edinburgh Ciyu Council to consult on plans for detailed planning application for the construction of a new cycle route linking the Roseburn Path to the Union Canal in Edinburgh.

The public event will be held on Wednesday 19th June 2019 from 2pm to 7:30pm at St. Brides Centre, 10 Orwell Terrace, Edinburgh, EH11 2DZ.

Members of the public are welcome to attend the above event on a ‘drop in’ basis where representatives of Edinburgh City Council will be available to discuss the proposed planning application and we would appropriate if members of your community group could attend and provide comments/inputs.

Information on the proposed development will be available at the public event or after in writing from WSP UK Ltd, 7th Floor, 110 Queen Street, Glasgow, G13BX. The same address can be used to submit any comments on the proposed development or alternatively, information can be obtained and comments made via email to graham.cann [AT] wsp.com. Comment should be made in full by 19.07.19.

Please be advised that comments made as part of the public event are not representations to the planning authority. Once a planning application has been formally submitted to the City of Edinburgh Council, there will be a separate opportunity to make representation on that application directly to the planning authority."

    Notes for Editors:

    1) To the uninitiated, Volume 1 follows the same format as Thick As A Brick by featuring just one monumental track, split, in true prog fashion, into just two parts.

    2) Whereas the underlying intention of TAAB is a spectacular mickeytake on contemporaneous and altogether more serious works, ECCCGH vol. 1 instead accidentally explores irony, its attempt at grandiosity undone by insufficient substance, thus appearing instead as the poor relation to Tales from Topographic Oceans.

I'm more intrigued by the fact that details of the new plans will only be available if you go along on the day or apply for it in writing.

    Anyone got a stamp?

I was so excited about this route that I joined Gorgie Dalry community council and ran their website for several years. In this time no progress was made on the cycle path at all.

    > *new* plans? What was wrong with the *old* plans?

When I read this, I thought 'well, the old plans were quite high-level and weren't a detailed design, so presumably this one will be closer to something you could actually build'.

Having looked at it, I think the 'masterplan' actually be more high level than the original plans. Hopefully it is indicative of a more detailed design otherwise I'm not quite sure what's new. Any differences from the old plan?

This appears to be the "Roseburn-West Approach Road Masterplan".

Is there a page 2 with the "West Approach Road-Canal Masterplan"?

That's a pain: I'm away on the 19th June, otherwise I'd be along to this (it is very local to me). Hopefully there will be other ways to contribute to the discussion.

That's exactly the same masterplan as was consulted on in 2015, which you can see here:

@Frenchy: I guess you would get to the canal by following the path along the WAR to the existing toucan via Melvin Walk (shared use path) and Gilmore Park (quiet dead-end). The crossing over Dundee Street should be made a toucan - this would reflect the way it is used already anyway.

There was chat last time around that the toucan crossing replacing the subway might link in to segregated paths on Dundee Street, but who knows.

@Morningsider: thanks for digging. Exactly the same plan then! I did wonder.
