I note this is illustrated with a photo of what appears to be a cross country MTB race on gravel and mud. Is that what the experience on the new cycle ways will be like?

Seriously, it couldn't just be two folk out for a pedal on what appears to be hard pack. The WOL path out to Balerno has more gnar.

Pretty lumpy hard pack by the looks of it (rider freewheeling out of the saddle), downhill at a fair lick too (or into a headwind) judging by the flapping baggy trews and hands hovering over brake levers.

I mentioned it only because the image used may indeed represent "cycling" (i.e.. fairly sporty MTB riding, not a gentle pootle) but hardly fits with this ambition for the cycle ways:

"the plans will have multiple benefits for school pupils, those with mobility scooters and for residents and tourists alike."

I'd like to see a mobility scooter getting along that particular 'hard pack' (or indeed along WOL path in its current state).

But the point of the WoL isn't for people to move about! Good heavens, it's a natural haven of blessed muddiness, and apparently we like it that way.

(The mobility scooter would also need badass lights to survive on the WoL without potentially crashing off into the river. I think it depends a bit on what "grade" of scooter you're riding).

Dog walkers and welly clad "ramblers" only please.

If the Hootsmon publications are to be believed, the new cycle ways in the East Neuk will require technical trail riding skillz. So a 4x4, high suspension, tractor-tyred mobility scooter might just manage (if indeed it existeth). Hell, just drive a mahoosive diesel pickup truck with monster tractor wheels and searchlights mounted on bars atop the cabin. That'll get you there. And to hell with the school pupils and tourists trying to cycle!
