Just a quick question to ask what the point of the small section of cycle lane on the Western Approach Road is when heading west from Lothian Road? I decided to find out where it went on my way home today and ended up in what just looked like a loading bay for the EICC. I managed to get out by 'salmoning' my way up a couple of ramps of what appeared to be a car park and exited onto Morrison Street so actually got where I was aiming but just thought it was bit of a redundant lane if it didn't get you anywhere. Was hoping for a nice wee shortcut through to Morrison Street but think I'd be better just doing my usual trip through from Festival Square.

That is a bona fide route. Not popular for the reasons you set out

Wow, really!? Seems really dicey going up the ramps when traffic could be coming the other way and likely wouldn't see you.

Didn't realise you could get through!

    (Thought it was deliveries only.)

Not allowed up the ramps. Not allowed to walk up the ramps, either. Legitimate escapes are walking through the connection to the underside of Exchange Crescent or leaving the way you got in (though the lights, despite being reported thrice, do not detect bikes) or walk up the back, beyond the ramps to the former automatic car park, going up the steps to the wee bit at the left-hand side of the Sheraton/passage through to Chuckie Pend.

The ramp is meant to be 'down' only. You drove in from Morrison St to access the Sky Park (or you could enter from the east end of the West Approach Road opposite Canning St, and exit slightly further west.

    Streetview

I've certainly been in the WAR entrance on my bike once or twice, and shinned up the ramp to Morrison St, but I was wary that there could be a vehicle coming down.

Given that the EEN reported in 2013 that it was going to be demolished, and reported in 2014 that it was going to be demolished, did this ever happen?

This was part of the planning requirements for the Atria office development / EICC extension. Supposed to link in to the underground cycle parking for both places.

It does seem completely stupid and can't say I've ever seen anybody use it.

SkyPark hasn't been demolished yet. Plan is to redevelop that corner including the wee car park.
