I have a Whyte Hybrid (700C rims) used mainly for chasing the kids about at weekends. After recent experiences the mud I've been thinking about some chunkier tyres - 45mm is a reasonable upper limit for my rims and frame.

I was hoping to find a 45mm cyclocross tyre but can't find anything. The other option is 29er x 1.75-ish but not having much luck there either. Look like 45mm is too wide for cyclocross and 1.75" is too narrow for MTBs.

Anyone got any suggestions or anything useful lying about in the shed for sale or swap.

(I believe I'll be able to fit 29er tyres to my 700C rims - any thoughts on that?)

As far as I'm aware 29er=700C=622, so you'll be fine on that front.

Surly Knard would probably be perfect, but unlikely to be cheap!

Schwalbe make Smart Sams in 700x45 (or 29"x1.75" as it's all the same thing).

@Urchaidh I have an unused pair of Maxxis Raze that you are welcome to have. They are 33s, so may be a bit narrow for you. Drop me a pm if you're interested.

Thanks all for the suggestions. I think my google-fu was weak, I've now learned to search using the ETRTO number which turned up some more hits, e.g the Smart Sams are listed as 28x1.75 in a few places, not 700c or 29er.

Looks like I can get the Sams or Knards for £15/£20 each if I go for wire bead. Just need to find some cash.

@chug - I think 33 would be too narrow for what I have in mind, but thanks.

I have a pair of Schwalbe 700cx45 (I think) Marathon Plus Tours in the shed - they are used but have a reasonable amount of tread. You'd be welcome to these...

If Marathon style tyres are a possibility (rather than actual tractor style tyres) I also have a couple of candidates that you could potentially have for nowt.

    PY tomorrow?

Thanks, but am really straying more towards the wide and knobbly tractor end of the market - admittedly more through prejudice than informed choice having never tried narrower CX style knobblies.

Thinks I'm going to give the Surlys a go.

(Keep thinking about coming to a PY, maybe a bit too much of a diversion for the Porty/Leith commute)
