As noted here the council will probably be undertaking a consultation in the spring on building segregated cycle paths on Dundee Street. While it is some months away, this thread can be used to gather ideas/suggestions/wishlists.

Segregated cycle paths on Dundee Street would be fantastic!

As I wrote on the other thread,

"I just want to stress the 'probably' in my remark suggesting this would be consulted on next spring, I don't know how far council plans have progressed. This was a throwaway comment from one of the council people at the consultation who mentioned that the potential new route along Dundee street would have to be taken into consideration when designing the link from Telfer Subway to the canal, and that this route was likely to be consulted on in the spring. I don't think that a final decision has been taken, and priorities might get changed. The council certainly haven't announced that this is happening yet."

Anyway, a link here would be really really excellent. For me the big questions are about what happens as you approach Lothian Road.

How to make it safe to go past the entrance to the WAR sliproad, without having to hold a confident position whilst eyeballing anything approaching behind...

Wasn't someone on the forum once taken out by a van turning into/out of one of the roads to the south?

"How to make it safe to go past the entrance to the WAR sliproad"

UtrechtCyclist said on the other thread that it would start at Fowler Terrace so the WAR entrance will probably be ignored?

@wingpig This. That sliproad off Dundee street is one of the most alarming junctions I encounter, thankfully no longer so frequently since my other half moved house.

I'd take an educated guess this will cover Dundee street and Fountainbridge from Murdoch Terrace to Lothian Road.

The road has been "marked out" so many times for resurfacing but has never been carried through. The lines along the middle of Dundee Street were refreshed a year or so ago, but seemed to be abandoned half way through.

As part of the new school there will be a general upgrade of the Viewforth / Dundee St / Foutainbridge junction including a raised table (or something)

I'm guessing that when building restarts on Fountainbridge there'll be plenty of developer cash floating round to fund a decent upgrade of the street scape.

Plenty of room for a 2 way cycle route linking to Lothian road, as well as widening the pavement on the south side. North side in generally good.

Note buses will be loading and unloading in the cycle lane on Dundee Street (!)

Indeed! We remarked on this on Sunday when we were outside the Sainsbury at Fountainpark. The central hatchings have never been painted in, but the bounding lines have, which has the effect of creating three active lanes, with no indication as to whether the central lane is east or westbound. Or a filter lane. Or not a lane at all...

Can be very scary when you want to turn right up Murdoch Terrace, move into the central "lane" only to find traffic wanting to turn right into Fountainpark driving at you also in the central "lane."

Looks like we’ll see some progress on this in the near future - tender issued for “the development of a high quality cycling infrastructure on the Dundee Street/ Fountainbridge corridor”

Perhaps the council works off leap years. Would explain a lot...

The link says it's a 60 month contract so won't be seeing that completed any time soon. The levels of quality are likely to be questionable at best given the parking habits around Fountainbridge. Suppose 5 years might see a change of mindset

    “tender issued”

This sort of thing is so basic it’s tragic CEC doesn’t have/want permanent staff to do it - and a thousand other things!!!!!!

@chdot Slightly concerning really, it’s a relatively straight street that mostly has parking restrictions. If this can’t be done in-house...

Perhaps staff are clogged up with the big Sustrans projects?

If only CEC would allocate all of the roads dept to active travel projects, instead of having them spend countless hours tinkering with traffic light timings, road junction layouts, etc.

“Perhaps staff are clogged up with the big Sustrans projects?”

No doubt: all the more reason for extra staff - or altering ‘business as usual’ priorities of existing ones.

II.1.5) Estimated total value Value excluding VAT: 271 000.00 GBP

Who would enter into a contract negotiation by starting with an estimated amount?

Terrible negotiation technique to show your hand like that.

Fountainbridge, Semple Street, Ponton Street and Lauriston Street are getting some rather needed resurfacing from 16/03. Given the level of change on Portobello Road, I'm hopeful we'll see some improvement for ped/cycles before the main scheme comes in 2022.
