Very good, he must have been following CCE!

The Scottish Government’s Transport Scotland agency understands this, and last week launched a design competition to encourage more segregated cycle lanes, which have kerbs to separate them from other vehicles.

Transport minister Derek Mackay said such lanes, common in the Netherlands and Denmark, would “encourage less confident cyclists to make day-to-day journeys by bike”.

This is not before time, since some of the few existing examples in Scotland fall far short of what is needed to attract more people to try cycling.

    ...

For a start, you wouldn’t know such routes existed without a cycle map, since they are omitted from many road atlases and online street plans.

Sustrans, the cycle path developers, generally does a good job maintaining and signposting main routes, and local authorities have started upping their game.

However, other paths are so badly signed that only the determined would give up.

But even on the national cycle network route between Edinburgh and Glasgow, there have been lengthy section closures that would be unacceptable on the roads.

Great to see some coverage for ideas like this. I wonder if the Scotsman visitors are any better than EEN ones ...

    ie pay some road tax

All cyclists to wear helmets as a legal requirement, also lights at night and a £ 100 fine if you cycle on pavements and to have insurance.

I thought cyclists had lots of cycle lanes "which have kerbs to separate them from other vehicles" ?

The rest of us call them pavements!

    ... never mind then.

Has anyone had any success engaging people who make comments like this?

I don't understand why we need a "design competition", rather than just following best practice.

Because then the minister can justify a one-off investment, rather than a regular commitment. Also he gets to pick his favourite/most politically expedient.

    Cynical, moi?

I've been thinking for some time the light priority on Whitehouse Loan and Marchmont Road should be changed to cycleway-green being default, with loops for vehicle detection, as on both roads it is objectively the more important route.
