    Hi!

Been looking for a pannier bag (get the weight off my back...) that is suitable for carrying my laptop and a few papers around, as well as the lunch and a shirt/underwear. Also would prefer something that is practical for getting off the bike and getting the train with a walk at the other end, or going to the shop on the way home, hence my attraction to a backpack type bag. I realise this will tend to involve an element of compromise!

Anyway, I've found this and was wondering if anyone else had one and likes it/hates it/has any suggestions for alternatives?

    Thanks!

    Hi,

I've had one for about 2 years now and am fairly happy with it, although I don't have experience with other model of backpack type pannier.
I've only used it a few times for my laptop.
I like the fact that it's really easy/quick to clip on the pannier rack. Occasionally I had it fall off the bike, but I think on these occasion, I didn't attach it properly.
I use the backpack option fairly rarely. It needs a bit of fiddling to roll the back of the pannier into the base of the bag to expose the backpack straps, so, not sure if other models are more practical for frequent use, but for me it's ok.
Not the most comfortable rucksack, but as you say, i guess you have to make some compromise.
So, overall, I'm an happy customer..

Thanks very much, sounds pretty good to me - also saw an Altura one which sits quite high to avoid heelstrikes but had far too many dangly bits for my liking.

Notice the Vaude one has a hooky bottom attachment, is this easy enough to work with?

Another question though - seen so many different shapes/styles of pannier rack. I know some are for disc brakes, but otherwise what is the difference? Do most bags work fine with most racks?!

@newtoit - The disc brake specific racks are designed to fit over the brake caliper, so are slightly wider than other racks. However not every disc braked bike requires this, as the mounts on the frame may be designed in such a way to allow a "normal" rack to fit. The normal ones may be slightly stronger.

Panniers will fit almost any rack, due to being designed with a large range of adjustment possible in the attachments fitted to the pannier. I say "almost", as racks are made with different diameters of tubing, and the pannier hooks need to be able to accommodate about three different sizes.

Ortlieb get round this by having inserts that slot into their hooks for two smaller sizes of tubing - no insert being required for the largest. I've seen other hooks that could be simply bent to fit, or had cam fittings to lock down on to varying tubes.

In any case, you will probably need to adjust the pannier fittings to match up with your rack, but this is just a minor case of trial and error, with an allen key or screwdriver (and some are tool free).

As for the hooks - I've never used a pannier that required them, but online reports suggest that they can be effective, but a faff compared to other attachment options that are quicker/easier to attach/detach.

The bottom hook attachment is not the greatest: easy enough to attach but its strap keeps getting loose and constantly need "re-tensing" (not sure I'm clear!). Anyway, usually I don't bother too much about it. Maybe I would if I had to cycle on cobbles regularly, but in general, I think the Vaude top attachment/clips are strong enough.

for info: I have disk brakes and a TORTEC TOUR RACK.
