...and as I said/linked on the other side of the page break...
Just checked on twitter and trafficscotland comfirmed it will be shut for peds/bikes.

No mention of cyclists in the stories I've seen. As the reason for closing seems to be not to have all the traffic on one carriageway, maybe it will stay open for bikes. Hopeless optimism, I know.
Posted 9 years ago # -
Maybe bikes can use the main carriageways!

Perhaps they should keep it open to buses. Surely a bus or 2 every minute wouldn't make a difference.

On the twit feed
Forth Road Bridge @forthroadbridge
Unfortunately the bridge is also going to be closed to cyclists and pedestrians. We will provide a further update tomorrow.Posted 9 years ago # -
Very disappointing that the Traffic Scotland bulletins make no mention of peds and cyclists. It's prompted me to send my first ever tweet, ie. to Traffic Scotland asking them to make clear

Ah well ...
I can see no justification for this at all, unless total collapse is imminent.

Burnout, actions speak louder than words. From what they are formally saying they do seem to be over reacting but perhaps they are trying to avoid causing panic.
Pintail, official frb twit account now seems to be doing a better job of including us.

Long delays have been reported on alternative routes during Friday morning’s rush-hour, with Traffic Scotland warning tailbacks on the A985 stretched for 11 miles at one point on the approach to the Kincardine bridge while there was a six-mile queue around the Clackmannanshire bridge.
ScotRail said it was adding extra carriages and staff for services on the rail bridge to and from Fife but asked the public to “only travel if necessary”.
Transport Scotland said the decision to implement the total closure of the bridge - which is also shut to cyclists and pedestrians - had been taken as a “precautionary step”.

If the east side walkway needs to be closed for vehicle access (which I could understand), why can the western one not be opened for peds & bikes?
Posted 9 years ago # -
Because drivers will say "it's not fair".
Posted 9 years ago # -
I suspect it would have been closed anyway soon due to high winds
Posted 9 years ago # -
closed until the new year

The Forth Road Bridge is to be closed until the New Year because of structural faults, Transport minister Derek Mackay has said.
The bridge has been closed since midnight with initial guidance saying it would be shut for at least 24 hours.
The minister has now said it would need at least three weeks to repair the bridge and safety was "paramount".
"
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-35001277That really can't include bikes/peds.
Can it??...

Shame it's not the best time of year for trialing hovercrafts and ferries.
Posted 9 years ago # -
And of course ScotRail has run out of 'extra' carriages.

Does mention ferries but not bikes

From link
"
Following a meeting of the Scottish Government Resilience Committee (SGoRR), chaired by the First Minister, the decision to close has been taken after inspections carried out by specialist engineers and following advice and assessment of the fault by independent experts.
Work is already under way to repair the FRB and this will be done as quickly as possible with a view that it will be reopened to traffic to allow it to be used for the return to work in January. Additional rail capacity was put on overnight and a full travel plan is being prepared for the duration of the closure.

Wow. That will be "interesting".
Posted 9 years ago # -
Nightmare scenario.
Not much chance they'll make exceptions for bike/peds, basically cos they just don't need to justify it.
They really should leave it open for bikes/peds/buses, such as is anticipated to be the case when the new car bridge opens late next year.
Thats Transport Scotland though. One hundred percent moto-centric.

Amazon will be chartering some ferries to help out their Dunfermline distribution centre!

They really should leave it open for bikes/peds/buses, such as is anticipated to be the case when the new car bridge opens late next year.
It does say "All other options are being explored including a dedicated bus corridor with park and ride facilities and passenger ferry services across the Forth. "
Does that mean a bus corridor across the bridge?
It will take a while to sort this out - I wonder if they've planned for this eventuality

if anyone desperately needs a folder, let me know. i'm sure a few weeks walking would do me good ;)
Posted 9 years ago # -
Could use a few miles of the M90 as the "park" part of the park and ride...

From the look of things, there is a pretty big crack on one of the towers. My guess is that bridge will be shut to bikes and Edinburgh will be cut off from civilisation...
Posted 9 years ago # -
The images on the BBC website show and describe the crack in being in the truss under the road deck, near where it meets the tower.

Going to be a hassle for us next weeek, as our (free) childcare is on the other side of the bridge.
Luckilly Mrs B only has 2 more working days left before break, but finding paid child care at such short notice locally will be an issue. As will her getting to work for 7am start, and 9pm fininsh going to make for 2 very long days by bus / train, basically 5:45am to 10:30pm, at least it's only 2 days...
Easier for me, I might have to stand on the train for a couple of weeks, at leqst my stops are near the start of the line both ways.
Posted 9 years ago # -
The Gruanianad quotes Scotrail as saying they hope to increase train capacity by 25% (!).
I think tripling it or quadrupling it might be closer to what is required...
