Leith Street is finally open again!
(And completely empty this morning)
CityCyclingEdinburgh was launched on the 27th of October 2009 as "an experiment".
IT’S TRUE!
CCE is 15years old!
Well done to ALL posters
It soon became useful and entertaining. There are regular posters, people who add useful info occasionally and plenty more who drop by to watch. That's fine. If you want to add news/comments it's easy to register and become a member.
RULES No personal insults. No swearing.
Leith Street is finally open again!
(And completely empty this morning)
Don't get used to it. Due to partially close again in January. I doubt it will fully reopen till about 2020
Disappointing! That central railing is still there. Now it will be a pain in proverbials to get out of Calton Road again.
Contraflow back on, with a nice two-cones-thick barrier opposite Calton Road acting as a perfect bike-sized refuge when turning right.
@jnty - Agreed, totally perfect for getting down Leith from the station. I wonder how that happened!
Allegedly the crossing at Greenside Row is back on, which suggests the lanes have been re-arranged?
I've actually come to quite enjoy the crossing being off as drivers seem to be generally giving pedestrians priority while the lights have been off. But it will be much better for crossing Leith Street itself.
"Allegedly the crossing at Greenside Row is back on"
Not before time!
No change to the lanes that I can see, but they have reconfigured the lights to work on the contraflow. Good! Wonder if they were asked to or whether this was always the plan - not clear why they couldn't have done it much earlier.
Living Streets Edinburgh wrote to councillors in mid September asking for a review of pedestrian facilities on Leith Street during the building works.
Greenside Row ped lights were not on this morning. I have been hating it as drivers have generally been driving straight at pedestrians.
My experience (at busy times, to be fair) was that drivers generally yielded to pedestrians, but lights will definitely improve things.
It's odd that they were off this morning, as they were definitely on last night when I went past - at least across Leith Street. Were the traffic lights totally off?
Traffic lights were on this morning going up Leith Street, which I presume was a recent change because they took me by surprise.
Cue overtake on the inside by a private hire going up the street while I was trying to turn down Calton Road. *shakes fist*
"I have been hating it as drivers have generally been driving straight at pedestrians."
Indeed, I have experienced this directly several times. Walked that way to the station around lunchtime today with children in tow: was pleased to see the pedestrian crossing FINALLY operational again.
I presume they had to do something, as the NCR car park in St James Centre closed last night at 7pm apparently. Cue LOTS more cars using the Greenside Row car park entrance/exit from now on...
Yes, I was wondering if it was something to do with drivers coming from Greenside Row. It is possible that I may just not have noticed the lights were on yesterday. They have been off for months and so just quietly switching them back on again was not enough to catch my attention.
You're probably right crowriver - this will be a Traffic Flow thing and not a pedestrians thing. Gah.
"They have been off for months" - I think it's about a year, is it not? Shockingly complacent really when you think about it.
"this will be a Traffic Flow thing and not a pedestrians thing."
Sigh. Yes, because we all know drivers are Very Important People who must not be delayed unduly on their way to picking up that essential fridge from John Lewis...
