    Presume HC wants some formatting.

It's years since I used Word, but there should be an 'export as HTML' option (Save menu?). This will probably add various bits of Microsoft code that WP will also strip out, but it should keep italics and bolds and perhaps some layout codes.

Adding photos is relatively straightforward from own computer and Flickr.

No, don't do what chdot says, follow Rosie!

I use Wordpress, and I just type straight in to the editor provided. You get formatting options there. You can also get an app on your phone; I have written a lot of my recent blog posts while on the train (you don't have to be connected to the internet to write a post). I do my final editing on a proper computer as it is easier to put in links and such.

You upload your photos into Wordpress itself and then link them into your blog post. At least, that's the way I've done it.

Seconded. Use Word if you're writing something to print out or to be viewed in Word. Paste it into Notepad first if you need to get stuff from Word into anything else, with the possible exception of Excel (in which case paste non-tabled text through Notepad and paste single tables at a time).

    OK

Probably better just to type into WP!

Just trying to accommodate HC's learning curve!

There is also new Wordpress desktop app: https://desktop.wordpress.com/ Not sure it's actually any easier than just using the website though.

Having the pictures embedded in the site would be good as well. Not actually sure of the best way of doing this, but I would probably upload them directly to wordpress, and then add inline.

on an earlier version of word that i was using, there was a thing where you could explicitly write a blogpost and then hit 'publish' and it would appear on your wordpress site. this seemed to vanish when I 'upgraded'/moved to a mac, but I found it an amazingly easy way to use wordpress (which I find much more confusing than blogger).

I use Wordpress on two different blogs & they are different versions, so copying and pasting one to the other sometimes requires a bit of tinkering with the HTML. One does videos as a straight link, the other you have to embed the code.

I find Wordpress okay though - about as easy as Typepad (which I pay for).

I use Editpad Lite which is basically notepad but it backs up as you go (useful if your computer has a tendency to hang up at the worst possible opportunity). Then paste into Wordpress and add the links and media. You can paste a word document direct into wordpress and it will retain embedded links but not images.

Wordpress has an annoying way of 'improving' its interface to make it simpler looking and much less functional. They have an annoying new editor which I avoid by bookmarking the link to old one ([your blog url here]/wp-admin/post-new.php)

Notepad++ is a far better plain text editor that the stock one you get for Windows.

    https://notepad-plus-plus.org/

    Only for Windows AFAIK

Fun though it is to discuss text editors :-) ... I wanted to post a quick note to remind people that the deadline for comments is on Friday so now's the chance if you haven't already done so!

I particularly hope that others will query the no cycling restriction been added at Newbridge that would prevent (legal) access to the path that leads up to Kirkliston/Dalmeny. While this is unsealed it's still a good and direct route thanks to being an old railway.

I also asked if there was any opportunity to route QuietRoute 9 through the middle of Gyle Public Park rather than round the periphery and round the houses at South Gyle Gardens. It feels like this would be more direct and offer better access to Tesco and the gym: https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=zt4DaP1IcRN4.k41HPLHf_KuQ.

@Chrispaton - I'm with you on both points.

I raised the Newbridge railway no-cycling restriction with the officer at the consultation and he didn't understand why it was draw on either.

You're right about Gyle Park too (which I've omitted from my blog). Personally I take the central path, which is not only more direct but it also makes you feel safer from being in the heart of the park.

The only downside is it isn't tarmacced and so prone to puddles.

The path round the edge of Gyle park is liable to flooding rather than puddles. It's just drying out now but last Friday I hadthr choice of walk through or miss my train so ended up with very wet feet.

Will add the suggestion to go through the middle to my submission although I suspect it would need to go to further consultatiob.

Yeah I got wet feet there on Monday. To be fair the rest of it isn't an awful lot better.

Over the last two days they have cleared a lot of the leaf mulch from the surface of the path. It now looks like this:

There are some good points in the spokes submission. I like the idea of continuing on the south of the A8 both for the Gyle centre and beyond the airport.

I've completed my submission mainly concentrating on the are east of the Gyle.

    "Dear all,

A8 CYCLE ROUTE UPGRADE - CONSULTATION RESPONSE

Thank you to each of you for your contribution during the consultation process for the above scheme. I received a great deal of feedback from; staff at the RBS HQ, those who turned up at Corstorphine Library on a particularly miserable night in November and others who took the time to email me both direct and via the cycling inbox (cycling@edinburgh.gov.uk). Your input has been invaluable in driving this project forward.

I have; collated your comments and questions; arranged them in manner that should make them easy to work through (starting at Newbridge Roundabout, heading East towards the Gyle) and provided responses. Many of your questions were the same or similar and it has at times been necessary to reword the questions in order to reduce the size of the document and provide a suitable response.

Please follow this link and scroll down to the bottom where you can download A8 cycle route upgrade - consultation response

    WHERE ARE WE NOW

Phase 1 is due to commence in Spring 2016. This will consist primarily of work in the Gyle Park, upgrading and widening the path as well as upgrading the lighting and planting around a dozen new trees. However, due to a number of factors, many of the other upgrades, previously considered non contentious, have been reassigned to Phase 2 works and will be carried out during the 2016/17 financial year. Furthermore, we are currently considering a Phase 3 programme for some of the more ambitious requests.

I hope you find my response useful and are looking forward to the proposed upgrades.

    Regards,

Bryan Mackie | Professional Officer | Strategic Planning (Cycling)"

I notice they have backtracked on the idea to make the Gogar Castle/ Cabinet makers junction cyclist priority, citing the danger of cars having to stop on the DC to make the turn. The reality is that if there was a bike on the path, as a driver you would have to slow to a stop anyway to make sure they were going to give way. In addition at Gogar Castle there is a risk that an outbound car would get in the way of your turn, so again, any car using this junction has to stop in any case. If the DC so dangerous either reduce the speed limit or ban 90 degree turn offs from it. Really short-sighted thinking IMHO.

    @stiltskin

feel disappointed with this - not much happening for 2 years and then what will happen is a very watered down and cost driven version of what was asked for.

I guess A8, unlike the A90 is not part of a tourist/Sustrans route.

I suspect we'll hear these phrases rolled out in connection with the Roseburn-Haymarket section of the Roseburn-Leith route too.

Good that they are going ahead with Phase 1 so soon, though! :-)

Having looked at the detail, it would look they have realised just how much could/should be done to it. I expect the consultation have them a lot to think about...

Lots of the detail still to be worked out for phase 2 but the potential for a phase 3 shows a glimmer of hope as does the comment

"Can the route from Dovecot Road to the A8 be made simpler?"
"Work on improving this route is being progressed as part of a separate project in 2016/17."

Have to say I too am very disappointed that they have backtracked on the cycle/ped priority at the Tram/Cabinet Works & Castle Gogar entrances. As Stiltskin points out vehicles leaving the A8 have perfect vision and currently slow and give way anyway. What's going to lead to a serious incident is the vehicles coming up to the A8 who can't see approaching cyclists.

Perhaps over these side roads there is required to be some reintegration with the A8 traffic that would then give cyclist right of way across the junction before segregation again. This is how i deal with many of the junctions west bound on the south side in particular the Norton entrance. Sadly i missed the consultation despite being in constant contact with west-team and use the route extensively there did not appear to be signage on the consultation on the route itself, or maybe i just did not notice it.

    Welcome BD

"there did not appear to be signage on the consultation on the route itself"

    Interesting point.

On routes like this, not really enough to mail drop local residents (presume they did?)

I find that these consultion notices often take the path of least resistance and get far less publication than projects deserve. Eg changes to access through clifton hall to camps in east calder area.

I only use this route PM and always travel the full length of the South side east to west and never on any of the north side, so might try some day next week just so I can feel the pain of those on the north. My AM route is via the A71.

Any up grade of this A8 route has been a very long time in even seeing the table, I am glad it appears to be happening. Although I was really hoping for a change at GSR junction and crossing the south side of the Gogar RB.

The sliproad for the westbound exit from the Airport was more than crank deep in water this morning- the culprit appeared to be runoff from the farm that Hankchief mentioned above.

Traffic cones in the middle of the lake and drivers ahd to take care to navigate around them.

Maybe this is a good thing- if it hampers our precious drivers, the cooncil may do something about it.
