Interesting development on the Charlotte Chapel on Rose street. New request for planning permission to convert it to a "Centre for Dance and Performing Arts"

Existing church becomes a 600 odd seated thatre type space, ground floor becomes a small bar, basement becomes and experimental event space.

Saw this on Skyscrapercity a few weeks ago. Looks good but worth remembering that this is a rival project to plans already submitted for a hotel/restaurant. I'm not sure what rights, if any, this project has to the chapel.

AMBITIOUS plans to transform a historic church into a theatre and centre for the performing arts have been given the go-ahead.

Councillors yesterday pushed through proposals from ballet legend Peter Schaufuss to turn the B-listed Charlotte Baptist Chapel in Rose Street into a £1.8 million performance space.

Meanwhile, a separate bid to open Edinburgh’s first dedicated steak and gin bar on the site was refused during the same planning meeting – despite the application being backed by the church’s current congregation and put forward by the building’s owner, Glendola Leisure Group.

That could be a very good use of the building. Hope it works out.

Edinburgh’s first dedicated steak and gin bar

Astonishing that the city has survived so long without a dedicated steak-and-gin bar.

Of all the steak-and-gin joints in all the towns in all the world, she had to walk into mine.

So somebody has put in a planning app and had it approved - even though they don't own the building nor have an option on it? Didn't think this was actually allowed.

I'd guess Glendola will tell them where they can go with their planning application

"Didn't think this was actually allowed."

Anyone can, but few do - for obvious reasons!

Depends how much they like gin (and steak).

Presumably the dance people think they can raise enough money to offer to the owner???

This is their's (close by) -

They are obviously a serious company -

Unless they have a good reason (money?) for walking away, I expect they'll appeal to SG...

Perhaps it's a conspiracy. I've never seen the later but I suspect there's plenty space for both a theatre and a gin and steak palace to co-exist in the building.
