Hello all
I'm looking for some advice from folks with road bike STIs - the black shifter arm seems to have lost tension in that when you press it, both arms (outer and inner) swing. It still shifts fine when you hold press against the outer arm. In short it's a little bit awkward, but not impossible, to shift gear and not something to attempt standing in the pedals. Brifters are 9 speed 105s, the r/h one having been sourced from the Bike Station this summer.
I'm wondering if there's some spring inside that's losing tension or if there's something to tighten up. Initial examination of a defunct right hand shifter has drawn a blank, but I haven't really stripped it down. That said, the levers on my defunct shifter feel 'tighter' than those on my bike just now.
I've so far tried flushing the shifter internals as much as possible with GT-85 and the cable is relatively new (as is the mech). Any ideas? So far my reading around online indicates the cleaning with some sort of solvent is the best hope (original grease turning to gum), but these aren't recommended for repair.
Given the age of these, I guess my shifter might be on its way to STI heaven...
