"Answer: because there are important things to do like cutting Air Passenger Duty by 50%. Of course. Oh, and keep building motorways and dual carriageways."

When I saw the UKIP manifesto - unlimited parking, raising the drink drive limit - I was astonished at the sheer "head in the sand", "we should be allowed to do what we want" approach.

And then I got thinking about the SNP...

The SNP are a party that claims to believe in climate change. But, if you look at their policies - rather than listen to their words - you'd assume they're a party that's in favour of climate change.

In which case, how are they any less crazy than UKIP?

(PS I write this as someone who has voted SNP in the past - so I'm not having a go at their voters.)

@gibbo, yeah you only need to read the SNP's manifesto "commitment" on fracking to see how they're trying desperately to have two positions on the issue:

"We will not allow fracking or underground coal gasification in Scotland unless it can be proved beyond any doubt that it will not harm our environment, communities or public health."

That's a contradiction right there. If you believe in climate change, then fracking to extract fossil fuels will inevitably "harm our environment". So exactly what test of "harm" will the SNP set for the "research" they recently commissioned to examine the potential for fracking in Scotland?

My guess is it will be a very narrow test as to whether fracking will pollute groundwater in the immediate vicinity of the drilling. If the "research" proves "beyond any doubt" that this will not happen, then frack away Ineos! Win-win, ker-ching! Watch the tax revenues roll in and the cheap gas flow! What was that about climate change again? But.....renewables, electric cars, low energy bulbs, etc.

An unprecedented three Scottish party leaders will take part in the annual Pedal on Parliament in Edinburgh on Saturday to lobby for more cycling funding, with turnout expected to top last year’s 4,000 participants.

Kezia Dugdale of Scottish Labour, Willie Rennie of the Scottish Liberal Democrats and Patrick Harvie of the Scottish Greens will join the fifth ride from The Meadows to Holyrood via George IV Bridge and the Royal Mile, which sets off at noon.

Transport minister Derek Mackay will take part for a second year. Organisers have also invited SNP leader Nicola Sturgeon and Scottish Conservatives leader Ruth Davidson.

A nice clear article, and useful, thank you Sally.

It's a shame so many of the commenters seem to be self-absorbed twits with no interest in cycling and very little knowledge of Scotland - e.g. talking of SMPs instead of MSPs.

We hope that the manifesto will be more specific, and we’re pleased the Labour leader, Kezia Dugdale, is planning to attend Pedal on Parliament as she has done regularly - in fact it’s what got her back on a bike in the first place.

Well it might be true or it might not. Remember Sheffield 1992?

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sheffield_Rally

I remember not being impressed with it at the time but I might not have been the target.

I've not seen any Labour posters but I think North Lanarkshire council banned them. There are SNP shops in Coatbridge and in Airdrie. I've not seen a Labour one. They had one near the boy's Turkish barber in the past or an office by the railway station and neither seems to be active at the moment.

The SNP canvassers were round a couple of weeks ago. We never used to see any because it was such a safe Labour seat but they started to appear last year. I've not seen Labour this time yet.

The local Labour web page is very out of date. It has Ms Lamont as leader and talks about a carpark which has been open for a few years.

The Scottish government is wilfully refusing to follow its own research and evidence and instead spinning a fairy tale that with more 'public education' things will change. But we don't need education. We need political leadership.

Interesting iconography from the Guardian. Low viewpoint, blue sky background but Ms Dugdale looking a bit tired and fraught like a teacher at the end of a day with troubled teens.

    That would surprise me.

Apart from 'SNP will win everything' I think Jim Eadie, has 'established' himself quite well.

Edinburgh Southern is knife-edge. I'll wager that whoever wins will have a three figure majority.

All televisions and newspapers were determined that Holyrood 2016 should be a fight about PAYE income tax.

    Interesting intervention from the Telegraph.

Edinburgh south is knife edge? How can this be? Is the indie vote split? Is it the start of the labour revival.

3 fig SNP maj of 999?

Did I mention a wasp is set to be elected in Dundee because voters have mistaken its yellow and black colouring to indicate it is SNP?

I didn't? I was trying to keep out of this. BUt now I have started I feel compelled to mention the man who went into the pet shop and asked the owner for a pet wasp. The owner said do not be ridiculous, we do not sell wasps, you can't keep a wasp as a pet. THat's funny, the customer said, you've got one in your window.

OK, I m,ay have mentioned that one before but I like it.

Edinburgh Southern is the beating northern heart of Her Britannic Majesty's Glorious Union. Mr Eadie will be sweating.

@iwrats: the fact that the website isn't working and people can't access the manifesto doesn't give a huge amount of confidence in Scottish Labour's organisation skills. If they can't get basic stuff like this right....

True that. I'm sure the launch worked in UNIT, SYST and ACCT?

"Mr Johnson has also drawn up a “personal manifesto” setting out his own priorities, promising annual “listening events” and pledging to volunteer one day a year in a classroom, a nursery and work a shift in a hospital or clinic.

“I’m not saying anything that contradicts the party manifesto..."

At least it sounds like candidates have been able to read it. Haven't tried it on my phone yet but it's not working with the work browser.

Three-figure figures are presumably smaller than the amount of mostly-newly-vote-enabled-16-17-year-olds, or the greater turnouts since the last Holyrood election exhibited in the Indyref and last year's Westminster vote.

    Manifesto now up.

Nice picture of Kez on a bike, but the extent of their active travel commitment is "we want to see more investment." Yeah, that ought to do it.

More importantly, Garreh Tank Commander interviews here.

Scottish Greens co-convener Patrick Harvie challenges Gary's assertion that the Greens are "like Spectre but with recycling" and tells how he got into trouble with Donald Trump.

UKIP's David Coburn on being a bams' bam, how climate change could benefit Scotland's tourism and why the country is at risk of becoming more like North Korea.

SNP leader Nicola Sturgeon likens it to being on a first date and assures the host that she has no plans to increase taxation on cheesy pasta.

Everything you need is in there!
