Conducted an impromptu survey while cycling past hundreds of vehicles between Dalmeny and Drum Brae North.

At least one in three drivers with their undivided attention on the smartphone while engine running.

A conservative estimate. Many, many drivers.

  3. To be fair bax, parked up in a jam for hours is not the best place to take a sample. I don't have a problem with someone checking the mobile when they are not likely to be moving any time soon.

    Polis in the Scotsman article

"A 20-year-old pedestrian was involved in a collision with a transit van."

    A collision?

Weird word choice. Seems to imply that the van was driving in one direction, and the ped was running towards it in the other.

POLICE have re-opened the A90 Queensferry Road after a 20-year-old pedestrian was hit by a van this morning, causing major traffic jams.

The man was knocked down by a Ford Transit at around 7am with police closing the road in both directions at the Clermiston junction.

He was taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary where he is being treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Point taken, however i'm merely seeking to demonise an affinity group that i dislike, and confirm my existing prejudices.

Everyone else is at it, after all.

@galaxy and it is against the law

  8. @Charlethepar, its also against the law to cycle on the pavement but many on here (and the police) would not have a problem with that if done safely and considerately.

With the difference being only one of those law-breaking activities has been approved by the chief constable...

The resulting traffic jams from the incident demonstrates just how many cars are being used, Craigcrook Road was solid in both directions. The additional noise and fumes whilst walking mini Nev-ette to school this morning wasn't nice! Also trying to cycle in the jam was tricky, was glad to get to the path.

Cross over this junction every day, the number of high speed red light jumpers (vehicles) is astonishing. Iam not surprised someone has been hit.
I passed just after seven the Fire Engines had just arrived, couldn't see much but the van was about three lengths from the crossing heading into town.
Hope the injured gets well soon.

I pass Barnton Junction most evening and almost without fail will see several cars jumping red lights there. Mostly turning right out of Maybury road which means they either get stopped 20m further on or jump a second red light.

Is red light jumping the new speeding, "Everyone else does it so it must be OK!"

There's a new rule which is the first 2 cars through the lights after they turn red don't count.

Yes, in a word - I think many maybe think there will be a safety margin built in that they can take advantage of, but this is far from always being the case, e.g. at Hanover/Queen St junction, Hanover St get amber to prepare to go while Queen St is at end of amber to stop, resulting in many near misses (not helped by Queen St's urban racetrack status). One junction further on at Dundas/Abercromby Place, there is conservatively 15 seconds between Abercromby/Fettes Row reds and Dundas St greens - all that prolonged delay tends to achieve is suckering in errant peds...

I watched two cars get flashed going through the RL camera at Gorgie RD/ Chesser Ave junction. Made me smile, then get annoyed as I nearly got stuck in the middle of the junction waiting to turn right.

Of course Jock's Lodge is on an "arterial route" so will remain at 30mph (real speed 40mph) for the foreseeable future...
