Did anyone come home that way? What was the access like? at the south we can cycle under the bridge on the service road but I'm not sure what they will have done to the north.

i was on the usual east side northbound mid afternoon

your concerns are valid, there's a lot of work going on over on the west side at the north end

also west side is far more exposed to the prevailing winds between now and april

    ach well

Rode home at 5.30 tonight, hit the bridge about 6pm and headed straight for the West path taking a longer route to do so. Arrived at the start of the path to find gates closed and no access. Had to lug the bike down the through the underpass and up the other side to find East side still open. Bloody shambles.

Heading northbound there's no need to use the underpass s you can cycle round the service road right next to it.

Dies the other side make much difference fire wind? I find the turbulence as you pass the towers is often the worst bit so would have guessed the other side was less affected.

At least they are keeping a path open.

Yesterday morning on east side southbound, i found the south end gate closed without explanation

Gave a Paddington stare over at bridge control and they did their best to avoid noticing me, so had to clamber over the fence regardless

I dunno about you guys but I've not been letting up when they continually put their temporary signage all over the cycle path at north end - the verbal response i inevitably get is "we can't please everyone" - but to my mind that just means "you guys don't really matter"

    "you guys don't really matter"

That's about the size of it when it comes to popular views on cycling in this country, unfortunately.

@acsimpson Yeh know about the service road and have used it before but to be honest my legs were burst after a hard turbo session and weights from the previous night and didn't fancy the short climb up. So I huffed and puffed through the underpass instead ;)

@suedehead99 @deckard112 Apologies - there was a delay in implementing the change - it will go ahead today instead

Operator Amey said: “The bridge is expected to be closed to cyclists and pedestrians throughout the day, and remains closed to HGVs while repairs to the truss end links continue.

I have no problem (or not much, anyway) with using the west path, but the information and signage are awful. Going over the bridge from the south last night (Thursday 28), the first issue is that on the east side there are huge signs saying the path is shut but nothing to say you can use the west path. I guess you just have to know. Then, at the north end, it seems you shouldn't continue down the bike path as you end up in a building site. I suppose you should go down the steps, under the bridge and up the other side. But again there are no signs. You only realize when you have gone a considerable way DOWN the hill and find a small no entry sign.

    @BurntOut

What I do at west side north end is to join the bus lane immediately, then take primary on the slip road to Ferrytoll

its not as bad as it sounds - preferable to carrying the bike up/down the stairs, i reckon

@bax, but how do you get onto the bridge from the North? I assume the old path has been subsumed by the building site.

Is it a case of going on East side to start of bridge and using steps?

Cheers @bax. There was no way I was going back up to the bridge in that wind last night, so I just squeezed past the no entry sign and then eventually had to go onto the slip road. It didn't seem very "official", though.

@paddyirish - good question. I think it will have to be the stairs.

There was a pavement adjacent to the Ferrytoll slip road, which i used, then just sidle past the layby, salmon-like.

But perhaps this is no longer an option, the layout may have changed

Have been WFH last 3 days so haven't had a chance to look myself. May try a recce at the weekend- one cycling only (as opposed to cycle lugging) option may be through the hotel grounds at N Queensferry, but that seems a big and unpleasant diversion.

That's us back on the east side again

The east footpath has now reopened to pedestrians and cyclists, with the west side closed for maintenance access.

I guess they closed it to install the hoists for replacing the link end wotsits.

I actually quite enjoyed being on the other side for a change although the diversions at either end weren't ideal.

Paddy didn't notice the gate was open and hopped under the South Side of the bridge as usual, dragged himself up the hill and found the west gate closed.

There was quite an amusing exchange between the FRB and Traffic Scotland Twitter accounts on that news. The person operating the TS account got a bit confused with their East and Wests which FRB kindly corrected. TS then admitted they were getting a ribbing in their office for being 'blonde'.

In fairness...you had to be there.

acsimpson - totally agree. I moaned about it but secretly quite liked it. Great view of the new bridge and brilliant exercise running up and down the stairs CX style.

The risk of hoiking my bike up and down steps is one reason I rarely go to the FRB. How is a near total absence of helpful signage, plus steps, in any way not treating certain people less favourably than others, according to the EA2010?

I didn't mind it as much as I first thought, but it was a pain in the backside in bad weather (which we got a lot of in the last few weeks- there really is nowhere to hide with a strong westerly) and when I wanted to get home quickly- never really brave enough to mix it with the traffic on the M90 slip road...

Mate of mine posted on Strava that the cycle path was blocked by Highway Maintenance this morning. Anyone else have issues?

Work to refurbish the footpaths on the Forth Road Bridge will commence on Monday 3 October and continue through to Thursday 6 October.

During this period the East footpath will be closed to the public from approximately 09:30 until 16:30 each day, when the West footpath will be open instead.

Cyclists wishing to avoid the steps to the West footpath may call Bridge Control on 0131 319 3083 to arrange a lift.

The work involves the removal and reinstatement of white lines and other road markings, and the installation of improved signage.

We are grateful to cyclists and pedestrians for their patience and understanding during these works.

Wonder if they will also put up speed cameras PMSL . Your supposed to keep to a 15mph speed limit and dismount at every barrier ! There is a lot of work being carried out on the bridge !

for what its worth, i had some chat with feta about the proliferation of "cyclist must dismount" signs on the bridge cycleway.

at one time there were more than a dozen, it was getting ridiculous.

i pointed out that it wasn't really feasible to comply, and that it seemed to be nothing more than a routine arse covering act on their part.

in reply, they acknowledged that the signs carried no legal weight and that i was free to ignore them.

they continue to put them up though, every time they erect any small barrier fence.

Planning to meet a friend for some after work cycling tomorrow at South Queensferry. Is possible to cycle from Inverkeithing to South Queensferry across the Forth Road Bridge?
