I'd say "exploratory works". I guess they're arguing about insurance, how much work is really required etc.

Don't know how long it's been like this, but seems perfectly reasonable to cycle with care -

    It's "open" again.

A day ago all the cable ties were burst open and it was going to take only 1 barrier be moved for that to happen.

It also looks like the 'road closed ahead, diversion' sign at New St has been collided with at high speed. It's in a bit of a state.

Now properly closed again. Nothing to do with the wall, but instead a digger and a trench for sticking pipes in. I'd like to see a crazy van driver dealing with that.

This morning a driver in front of me took the turn-off for Calton Road, came to a halt at the barriers and started to reverse. I moved to go round him to the left so he would have space to turn right back onto Leith Street. Instead he pointed at Calton Hill and shot past me and past the No Entry sign.

IS - why has it taken 5 months to fail to repair a small section of retaining wall?

Me - Uuummmmmm. This Is Edinburgh?

"But council procurement procedures have led to long delays. "

Sometimes I hate being right.. ::-/

Tony Kenmuir, of Central Taxis, said...

“We can’t stop at Waverley Steps because there are so many buses, "

No Tony, those are Taxis that are blocking Waverley Steps, not buses.

Trust the Tories to push for more rapid reopening of a road. Because motor vehicles dropping off passengers at the back of Waverley are so much more important than pedestrians and cyclists going there. I like it closed, thanks very much.

However I noted last night that vigilante drivists have once more shoved crowd barriers out of the way, so now half the road is passable by motor vehicles...

This is getting ridiculous. Anyone contacted the local councillors?

Closed at 1pm today but don't think it'll be long till it's open again (unofficially)

Closed down towards Carlton studios too as laying a purple plastic pipe.

This did not stop two cars yesterday though in fairness they were only parking near the station

Remedial work on the wall appears to have started yesterday.

Works have indeed started. Not looking forward to the road reopening - is the car going to go down Calton Road or up Leith Street? Take a gamble and cross the road.

This morning the barriers had been moved allowing motor vehicles to come inches away from crushing unsuspecting pedestrians once more. Looked like DIY but it also looked like the wall had been repaired.

Yeah, barriers had been moved to form a slightly narrower road funnel yesterday. Not sure if legit or not - I suspect not. But wall has appeared fixed for a few days now.

The No Entry sign at the foot of Calton Hill has been joined (not replaced) by two No Motor Vehicles signs.

Barriers wide open yesterday evening. Weirdly no motor vehicles cheekily storming down the road though.

I think most drivers have begun to realise the "road closed" signs are real. Only now, it is only legally true not physically true. Not long before they start cheeky storming!

Aye, barriers were wide open all weekend. Wait until school holidays are over and watch the cheeky storming epidemic...

Is Calton Road accessable by bike just now?

Barriers wide open this morning, and even when they've been shut it's been possible to push for a short distance along the pavement.

I suspect the only thing delaying project completion is the lack of guard rail on the new retaining wall.

Oh dear, that'll be another few months of council procurement procedures then..

Calton Road is ALWAYS accessible by bike. Even if you have to get off and push for a bit. :-)

All the barriers at Calton Rd level are now gone, only the recently added sign on the lamp post 'Calton Rd closed' remains.
