Currently commute from Inverkeithing Park and Ride and its mainly cycle paths and quiet residential streets, however possibly moving to Bonnyrigg in the near future and wondering whats it like to commute into the city center?

Dont mind cycling on the road but not overly confident, is there cycle paths that can be used etc?

    cheers

I commute in from Bonnyrigg to Crewe Toll most days, and usually it's a case of the A768 through Lasswade up to Lang Loan then via the Murrays, Kirk Brae, Kings Buildings, Meadows, Lothian Road, Dean Bridge etc..the town sections generally have bus lanes and/or cycle paths however from Bonnyrigg to the city boundaries, it's mainly fast (NSL or 40) roads but have never felt it dangerous. The main snag is getting past the often massive lines of traffic. Probably the most noticeable element of the trip is the hills, it's a great commute for improving climbing ability.

Mmm, so that's what segregated cycle paths would be good for!

    Which side of Bonnyrigg?

The A7 provides a flatter route and feels fairly safe on account of slow traffic speeds (at rush hour) along with a small hard shoulder. There are bike paths/lanes on either the Gilmerton Road way or the Dalkeith Road way. You can also avoid traffic and hills quite a lot if you follow the NCN 1 via Whitecraig, outskirts of Musselburgh and onto the Innocent. But it's further (depending on where you're going)

    Thanks chdot.

Zesty, I'd second Amir's comments about the A7/A772 being suitable too - indeed I use this at times if not in the mood to climb on the way home!

Its the new houses near Lasswade high school going to Charlotte Sq so the Dalkeith/Musselburgh route is out.

Did look at the A7/A772 originally but thought it might be a bit to busy for my comfort levels!

Thanks for the suggestions, will just need to try them out and see how I get one!!
