There had been some talk of getting together after work this evening at the Caley Sample Rooms. I'm not going to be able to make this as I've got to be at work until 6 today (in two different places at the same time...), and then might be found at the Doctor's for a little while after....but some day next week may prove more do-able.

I think we've forgotten to organise it. We were obviously all just too excited with it being the 1st birthday and all.
Tonight might be a bit short notice and I think I've a pre-existing ale date in my diary, but what other day would suit a sufficient number of folks to give us a faint chance of organising a p***-up in a brewery?
Or am I not factoring in that there is at least 1 flash-mobbist active on here?

I am at the gym tonight then have sword training so I can't make it and Wednesdays are not good for me at all. Or Tuesdays. Sundays Mondays and Thursdays get my vote if it is wanted (and even if it is not)
PS Does anyone know if there is a better access to the QMile buildings from the meadows rather than having to pedal up to Lauriston and then back down to the bottom again?

Half way up MMW. Turn left along either side of Peter's Yard / Sainsbury's / Starbucks building. Will get you all the way through to the other end of the development (street I can't remember the name of with the Eye Pavilion, Blood Donor Centre and the Clap Clinic on it.

I should explain I am coming from the West past Kings theatre onto the meadows, I do not want to cycle up Chalmers St to cycle back down into the complex...
Is there a connection from Meadows up to Simpson Loan?
And why does the dotted red line vanish on that map?Posted 14 years ago # -
Depending on where you are coming from, I would say North Meadow walk and then up Chalmers St - we go that way to the Eye Pavilion etc. Access was a bit dodgy when they were building, but fine now. MMW only makes sense if you're coming from the east.

Depends what you think about one way streets...

oops. yes. Nightingale way is one-way east-west. Had forgotten. Only went through once before it was fully open.

@spitfire - Sword training? Did I see you and some pals on Bruntsfield Links at the weekend, over towards the EBC? Not often you hear the clashing of swords that far from Pilton.
Anyway, beer-wise most evenings are fine with me (that says a lot!)

Don't mess with swords.... they'll cut you wide open!!!!

@miggy_magic - yes, sword training, but also axe and spear and staff etc.
No you won't have seen us outside - I am pretty sure that is illegal unless there is a roped off barrier and at an organised (and insured) event. We train indoors every weekThis week though we branched out and had a self defense lesson using every day household items, I had my bike along and became amazed at what can be used, some aggressively and some purely as passive defense:
- Pump - small one can be used to strike down with or deflect knives like a kubotan
- Keys - one between each knuckle
- Helmet - use as a shield or boxing glove
- Lights - blind them with the best light you got, follow up with:
- Chain - obvious really, keep distance with it
- Pannier bag - bigger shield
- Coins - throw at face - run or roll of them in fist
- Mobile phone - as kubotan
- Jacket - again thrown at face for a get away or wrapped around fist if fending off knives
Then I emptied the bag proper and had a look at the toolkit...
- Spanner - as kubotan
- Tyre levers - knife deflection again
- Tube - wrap around hand to protect from knives and also act as a boxing glove (proved very effective)
- Chain oil - go for the eyes
- Compressed air cannister - that's gonna leave a mark!
Had to fend off attackers using a variety of other things including a belt and a big metal file, closed penknife and a rolled up magazine (we've all seen the Bourne movies right?)all in all it was pretty much common sense but a few tips I would feel pretty good with should some idiot try to mug me for my bike

glad I never came along now, I've usually got a couple of gear cables... I'm sure a certain someone would have a had a field-day with those

It's going to take a little time to arm yourself with a chain. You could just carry a pointed stick.
Anyway, you seem to have missed out the main method of dealing with a banana wielding maniac.

@wee folding bike - nope, we covered that too (or at least I overheard someone doing that sketch when I was busy mashing my helmet into someone's face and avoiding being tripped up)
And as for the chain it is on my handlebars so all I need to do is to lift it off over the brake levers and unlock it if I have time...
Now you mention it you reminded me we used a Double Decker bar as a kubotan too... good and strong because the choclate/rice crispie base is like concrete when cold so if it was a really green banana...Posted 14 years ago # -
swerving back towards the topic ;)
I didn't even realise we had a date set. Next Wednesday or Thursday would be ok with me.

Tick the times and days that suit you
That way we can see at a glance which day is looking best for most if not all peeps.
Speaking of which - who's up for meeting for Critical Mass before the clocks go back? Anth? I think you said you were willing to try to gain an experienced opinion?
They always tend to finish in a pub (Pear Tree usually I think) so we could advertise the forum to more people?Posted 14 years ago # -
Clever widget. Have filled it in. I'm away next thursday / friday doing my C2C ride.
