"Removing white lines may cause motorists to slow down"

I am not for lines being removed as I just think it would lead to more cars on the wrong side of the road. Drivers may slow down for other cars but bikes ..

I agree with wishicouldgofaster.
Also, this effect is likely IMO to be down to the novelty value - if this became the norm, speeds would creep back up but without the discipline (of sorts) that lanes enforce. You only need to see how many born-and-bred locals drive on single track roads up north to realise this is the case.

Not sure why they put this in the article...
Recent research from the organisation found that 15 per cent of drivers have very often or quite often experienced episodes where they can’t remember the last few moments, or longer, of their journeys.
...but this is a good thing because it means that the driver probably drove well. A driver is more likely to remember the bits of journey where they came into conflict, or 'ooh, that was a bit close', or nearly crashed, etc.

I was once sent on a driver awareness course, for speeding on the M74 a few years back. I have to say it was one of the most insightful things I've attended, actually achieved its purpose and still shapes my driving habits today. Anyway, one area the course covered is attention span when driving. It's been proven that all people go through natural peaks and troughs in their attention and awareness and is to do with psychology more than carelessness.

The article also contains this statement about shared space:
Transport experts in the Netherlands also found that leaving drivers, pedestrians and cyclists to their own devices can be ideal, during a 2002 study.
I thought that philosophy had been discredited some time ago?

It's all to do with traffic volumes - shared space should only be used for appropriately low traffic volumes, like on an access road to a few properties, unlike the British approach of bunging it on to a main road, where might quickly asserts itself...
