A few really slippy patches were lurking today such as the old favourite, the s-bend on the towpath at Wester Hailes. The cyclist in front of me went down, again it was at the big metal cover. Treacherous spot.

Same this morning. There was a chap inspecting his bike at the S-bend (suspect he'd just come off it), although the S-bend puddle was largely slush. A bit further on, when the guy in front of me made the right turn off the towpath onto Cultins Road he went straight down in a heap as there was quite a patch of glassy ice on the junction.

For the second (or possibly third) time this winter I was grateful for my Schwalbe Winters. They meant that all the ice on the towpath was drama-free as I went over it. I was impressed that I was able, despite being on ice, to brake and steer cautiously around the bike that fell in front of me.

(That sounds quite callous, as if I just saw him lying on the ground and rode round him. Actually I was close enough behind him that when he went down it was a choice of going round him or going into him. I stopped, but he got up and scuttled off without any help)

I'm glad that I avoided that section this morning. Whilst I was out last night and felt that it was pretty cold, it seemed rather less cold on my way home so I hadn't really anticipated it being particularly icy this morning; after turning onto NMW from MMW it became obvious quite quickly.

Yeah, I came off today on North Meadow Walk because of the ice: Braked to avoid someone who had started to push their pram around the rumble strips onto the bike side, and my front wheel just slipped away. Slid for quite an impressive distance!

Normally the sloping bits of Ettrick Road are quite treacherous in this weather. But today the black ice was at the bottom, at the junction of Polwarth Grove and Polwarth Terrace. Sigh.

NMW was well gritted today. It's not on the priority list, so it's always good when it is done.

"It's not on the priority list"

    Should be.

Can't remember if it was and got 'accidentally removed' or whether that was MMW.

I sent a query to the cycling team in November about how priority routes are selected and if there is a process whereby we can recommend additions/subtractions.

NMW should be included now, but especially before the canal-meadows-innocent route is finished.

The Council certainly didn't skimp on salting Leamington Walk and MMW this morning. Just a bit worried my bike may have dissolved during the day.
