    Hi

I decided to maintain my hubs after about 10 years of doing nothing with them, dismantle, clean, grease, reassemble, easy-peasy? Well, yes and no.

First a cone spanner is essential but what size? Both hubs are Shimano Tiagra, front says HB4400 and rear FH4400i. Is it likely the cones are different sizes, the best I can do to measure them without calipers is, front 13mm and rear 14 or 15mm.

Second, what bits of a hub can you obtain separately these days? Can you get ball bearings and those rubber grommet things that go on the outside to stop crud getting in?

    Many thanks.

    This will cover everything

If you were going to do this often(!) I'd recommend -

(Mine are over 20 years old)

Loose ball bearings available at good bike shops - better than caged one as they mean slightly more contact area.

Front and rear probably different sizes.

Rubber bits, don't know if you can buy, if not reusable try Bike Station.

If cones very worn, might get expensive.

If cones are worn, I found trying to replace mine nippy as there doesn't seem to be any standard size. Had to trawl through 3 shops before I found one close enough to use as replacement.

Cone spanners usually come in a set of 2 being 4 different sizes.

I think the others have already answered your questions - but thought I'd chip in too. I would recommend disassembling the hub before you get replacement parts - means you can inspect for wear first - depending on what's worn it may be better to replace the entire hub.

Keep an eye out for any spalls - (a worn/rough patch that should be localized to one spot if caught early - although I have seen spalls that have been almost fully circumferential). Anything that has a spall has already failed and should really be replaced. I've experienced a hub failure out on a ride (after ignoring signs of early wear on the raceways) and had a rather uncomfortable and crunchy cycle home - I would not recommend it!

Rollers (balls) are easily replaceable, cones more difficult (try multiple shops - particularly those that recycle parts as Tractorfactory indicated), if the cup has wear then you need a new hub!

For grease - the usual recommendation is trailer axle grease - you can get it from marine supply shops online. If memory serves me right it was a lot cheaper than bike-specific greases!

I got replacement Shimano RS80 axle and cones from SJS Cycles. If you need to replace both cones I would recommend buying the right-hand set pre-attached to a new axle. There are useful videos about Shimano hub servicing on YouTube.
