There's some sort of purple piping being installed into the verge alongside the cycle path, with associated excavators, barriers and the odd van. Expect delays of up to five seconds at peak times.

I was hoping it was the start of some proper drainage for the path, but it's for fibre optic cable according a sign near where the work is being done.

Yes, its for fibre optic cables. Unfortunately they've made the usual hash of filling in the trenches they dug across the path at the bridge- very poor standard, rough and will of course deteriorate in time.

Personally I was hoping it was to build pedestrian access to the new housing development next to the path. There are already two desire lines developing and it seems madness not to build access to one of the best local amenities in the area.

If path adopted as road by Council then any works MUST comply with Chapter 8 TRSGD road signage manual and have safety barriers, warning signs a route for diverted traffic and a sign with details of who is in charge - and person to contact regarding works. It does sound as if this is being delivered, but worth making sure there is not a 'just a path' approach to this issue.

I was agent for a couple of such projects on Sustrans paths, and refused to let work start of the site was not signed and with a safe diversion past any work site.

As a construction site H&SC will obviously take an interest in the use of safe working practices.

On one job we had a 'post-work' drainage snag. Crossing one bridge the workers cut through the puddle clay layer which waterproofed the arches and a wet line appeared under the bridge. A quick inspection trench revealed what had happened and we made the company repair the waterproofing.

If the work is rough is it damaging the drainage which is already there? Could the detail restoration of the site improve the drainage?

    Perhaps some pictures?

If it doesn't get properly reinstated the Council should behaving a word with the contactor.

"The Edinburgh Core" on the sign at the east.

Working between the bridges today. One spoilheap, two badly-refilled angled trenches and two vans on the path this morning. The trenches are so bad it must surely be in anticipation of being properly levelled and sealed, but they forget that in the meantime people are still using it.

If Tulyar (above) is correct (commonly so) maybe needs reporting.

Copied in @north_team and @edintravel. There's that helpful new @edinhelp, too...

    Ha:

    "@EDINCore
@wingpig @north_team Thanks for getting in touch - this is a temporary reinstatement and will be completed within 24 hours."

It looks like the temporary reinstatement has been replaced with a bodged, hand-laid tarmac effort.

Posted too soon, they've now made a reasonably good job of the repairs.

Ta. I was going to pop down at lunchtime to get a photo but can now go somewhere else. The older trench a wee bit further clockwise next to the lamp-post is quite lumpy and tends to attract/retain little spicules of glass, so another badly-filled trench in the area popular for glass-smashing would have been unfortunate.

That sort of angle is bad for wiggling wheels as you cycle over. Surely the best practice should be to head at 90degrees across a path?

This morning when I went down that way I was pleased to see the previously poorly reinstated trenches had been smoothly finished off. Hope that continues!

It is all back nice and flat around the Crewe Road North bridge. However, some newer works (hopefully resolving the permanent megapuddle under Granton Road) and the vans to carry the people and stuff to enact them have made the path several times muddier than its usual maximum between Granton Road and Ainslie Park.

After a promising start Edincore seem to have given up. I counted 7 part re-instated trenches across the path, several piles of purple barriers and a load of mud sprayed across the path. No activity on site for the past week.

Tut. Are you on the twitters/do you have photos? There were some purple pipes lying around on Saturday morning too. I'll try and pop home that way and electro-nag @Edincore again.

I totally agree with Luath, the purple pipes are still scattered around as well as some of the "roadworks" signs.
It certainly doesn't look like the've done any works for at least a week after laying the fibre cable. The badly filled trenches will be continue to be a real hazard if they're left in the current state (ie very similar to how many of the remedial roadworks are left after utilities have done their thing on the city's roads.

I just submitted this only the CEC online form (not easy to use as it asks for "road or pavement" and shared paths aren't an otion!!
"The path has been subject to the laying of fibre optic cable for the last couple of weeks. The works stretch from Crewe Toll bridge to Granton Road. Trenches (approx 6 at intervals) have been filled in very badly and present a real hazard to cyclists. The cable laying works appear to be finished (for more than a week now), and it appears all workers have left site as "completed" there is also a good deal of mud left after the works on the surface from the works vehicle tyres."

I finally managed to get an update from the project supervisor for CityFibre who are responsible for the works. Apparently there's still a final connection to be to Granton Road. Once that's done they will complete the reinstatement and remove the barriers. All due to happen next week...
