The European automobile industry is proud to announce that we don't need to reduce emissions through a modal shift away from dependence on all having our own cars.

We simply have to spend £500bn resurfacing all of Europe's major roads with lower rolling resistance surfaces. And by "we" they mean "you", not "they". I'm sure car addicts will happily have this level of subsidy tacked on to their "road tax" on a per machina basis.

    "lower rolling resistance surfaces"

Will all vehicles have to go much slower as braking will be less effective?

    "

Another 10% of CO2 pollution could be saved by teaching drivers how to plan trips to avoid congestion, reduce engine idling, drive at stable speeds and regularly maintenance their cars.

    "

Which could happen without a mass resurfacing project - but is just as unlikely to happen!

    Bit early isn't it?

Another 10% of CO2 pollution could be saved by teaching drivers how to plan trips to avoid congestion, reduce engine idling, drive at stable speeds and regularly maintenance their cars.

Well we all know how effective training people to drive is.

And no carbon cost for all that resurfacing?

Rolling resistance isn't the same as friction.

"The Norwegian Government target has been defined as 10 % reduction of the number of annoyed persons before 2020 as compared to the situation in 1999."

Rolling resistance isn't the same as friction.

I just looked up the former on Wikipedia, and it seems to contradict perceived cycling wisdom about wheel diameters...

"For pneumatic tires on hard pavement, it is reported that the effect of diameter on rolling resistance is negligible (within a practical range of diameters)"
