This is probably the key bit -

    "

All parties are committed to keeping Lothian Buses in public ownership and all promise to spend more on maintenance of the city’s roads and pavements.

    "

So less chance of multiple bus companies creating chaos.

The next bit is most crucial.

No point in agreeing to 'fix the roads/pavements' without money, and (more importantly) a real plan.

THIS should no longer be 'good enough'.

On the basis of that EEN summary, it looks like I got my votes in the right order.

I've read this a number of times in various publications and am still left scratching my head:
But the SNP manifesto is more cautious, supporting the extension in principle, but setting conditions which must be met before it goes ahead – including an assurance that the project will be properly managed, disruption will be kept to a minimum and small and independent businesses will be supported throughout the works.

Isn't it the council's job (and therefore the SNP's job if it is in the position to implement its manifesto) to ensure that the project will be properly managed?

"Isn't it the council's job (and therefore the SNP's job if it is in the position to implement its manifesto) to ensure that the project will be properly managed?"

    Well yes.

I think they are being reluctant to say anything that sounds like a policy/decision!

There is no doubt that previously things weren't under control, partly because of the arms-length company (which was a political decision) and also the nature of various contracts (which probably involved legal incompetence).

In addition the amount of misinformation (that's the polite word) - notable between various people 'in charge' and councillors (and the public) was staggering.

"On time and on budget" where largely lies told by people who (it would seem) knew it wasn't true and repeated by people whose job it should have been to be less gullible.

For the future, 'tram, yes or no' shouldn't be the simplistic binary.

There needs to be a rational 'people mobility plan'.

'We have to accept that the tram is helping to get more people using public transport and is now carrying six million passengers a year to and from West Edinburgh.'

That's a really odd way of saying things, am struggling to decode it.

Should we read anything in to the fact that the SNP's statement is not given by Adam McVey? SNP will not be my number one but they'd be higher up the list if there was a guarantee that Adam McVey will continue to represent them on transport things, he's generally pretty good.

It's not clear from the article whether the defamation case actually went to court or not, but anyway Cardownie has won the following apology from Cllr Orr: ‘I accept that each and all these allegations and imputations were and remain entirely false and without foundation and ought never to have been made. I apologise for making them’.”

Doesn't sound very convincing, more like he was under duress.

    From Stickman's article:

    "Labour ...
    the SNP ...
    The Conservatives ...
    The Greens ...
    The Lib Dems ...
    The Tories ..."

Did someone forget who the Tories are?

Still only a third of Edinburgh candidates have responded to the Walk Cycle Vote asks.

If you haven't done so already, and have a moment, please check out who your candidates are here http://walkcyclevote.scot/candidate-info/

Then contact them to ask if they will sign up to our three 'asks'.

It was interesting chatting to some parents / grandparents this afternoon at my kids' music school. Regarding the council elections, if this is a representative of normal, busy folk who intend to vote, then the following became clear:

    1. - Nobody seems to understand the voting system. I was literally the only person who knew you're supposed to rank the candidates in order of preference (at least until you can't stand it any more).

2 - Several folk think they are voting for just one councillor and don't realise we have multiple councillors in each ward. When I explained this they could see the sense in ranking candidates 1,2,3,4. etc.

These are reasonably well educated middle class folk who all intended to vote next week. Goodness knows what older voters make of the system (well I can guess: looking at the Conservative vote in Leith Walk last time very few of those voters used their second preference votes, never mind third or more).

Yes, spoke to some people on the streets of Craigmillar today. No one there understands the voting system. The people I was with reckon on 25% functional illiteracy there amongst adults.

Having four different systems is a nonsense.

"Nobody seems to understand the voting system"

Presumably if 'most' voters just put a 1 (or even x), there'd be more fuss.

    Or maybe not(?)

This is not recent, but always questions about CEC, its arms length companies and the planning process -

    "

A further clear question asked by members of the various deputations was around whether it was correct that Councillor Frank Ross should be present on the Planning Committee when he was also on the board of so many of the cities development holding companies.

A LABOUR candidate in this week’s council elections appears to have broken ranks with his party over the controversial 20mph limit.

Scott Arthur, who is standing in Colinton/Fairmilehead ward, has listed a review of the speed cap among his priorities in a leaflet distributed to homes in the area.

But the council’s Labour leadership confirmed the party’s policy was to press ahead with the roll-out of the 20mph limit and any review would follow implementation.

    ...

But Dr Arthur said: “Since January my campaign team and I have spoken to about 1500 people in the ward. “Like me they want the roads to be safe for them and their families.

Their heart tells them the 20mph zone should work, but they want to be convinced of that.

    Scott Arthur is a cyclist;

I have lived in Colinton/Fairmilehead for 15 years and cycle the length of the ward every day on the way to work.

who is willing to put his constituent's speed fantasies before the lives of himself and his children. Selfless indeed.

Well any voters in Colinton/Fairmilehead who want to see 20mph retained can be careful about listing candidates in order of their support for 20mph, presumably?

Disappointed to see that labour candidate in Colinton Fairmilehead is 'questioning' 20mph.

I guess he needs to be given the Nick Cook treatment - i.e. asked, "So which roads in your constituency would you convert back to 30mph?"

Well you can always ask him here: https://twitter.com/@DrScottThinks

Seems to be a bit hung up on Scottishness...

Also describes himself as (amongst other things) a Civil Engineer. Building roads maybe?

I think in the local election conservative is the choice as had 2 brochure through the door someone called Bruce that rides a road bike and has cycled 1500 miles for charity and looks around 80. For the national election think it will have to be SNP as tactical vote for Corbyn, if Corbyn was considered a subversive in the 80s can only be an improvement on the yes men on offer national government.

I could not make up my mind how to vote nationally until read May warns voting for SNP will put Corbyn in into No 10, I had not thought of that tactical vote.

Nick Cook trying to make hay from Scott Arthur being sceptical abput 20mph. Ignoring that Conservative candidates are being negative about the EW cycle route, despite supposed party support for cycling.

I once spent three hours in Nick Cook's mum's garage. He's OK.

    Nothing to see here though.

    @gembo

Back in the winter of thirteen I wanted to hear what the Better Togethers had by way of argument. Used their website to look for local events. Turned out to be Nick and Ian Murray's office manager stuffing envelopes in the garage. They thought I'd come to help, which I hadn't, but nor had I come to hinder. I had come with questions cruel and subtle which they tolerated and eventually got me a cup of tea. Murray's aide, despite having a first in PPE from Oxford did not know that the Poblacht na hÉireann had previously been an integral part of the United Kingdom. I wonder if he had an inkling that the 'success' of his campaign would do so much damage to his career plans.

He also has shown bad judgement in bringing to the council his own personal beliefs, such as his views on climate change
