    My polling station was very busy. This was maybe a factor of going at a different time from my normal.

    I even had a short wait for a booth after queuing for my paper

    The staff were all taking good time to explain the ballot paper, you can vote for as many or as few as you want, #1 is your most wanted, and answering any questions.

    They seemed not to be able to advise on the optimal voting strategy of vote til you boak.

    Due to the way the STV voting system works, no party is expected to win an overall majority of seats in almost all of Scotland’s 32 councils.

    That means several days of political horsetrading can be expected once final results are declared on Friday, with two or three party deals likely.

    The SNP has already ruled out forming any coalition with Ruth Davidson’s party, and has accused Labour of so far avoiding the issue.

    Of course Scotland, Edinburgh & Glasgow are different, but it will interesting to see if similar happens here -

    "

    Labour holds Swansea

    This – with Cardiff – means two key councils stay red, an important win on a mixed night for Labour in Wales.

    @chdot hmm, not entirely surprising to find that the Scotsman comments have mostly come from Tory voters so far and presumably from some of the same people who are quick to comment negatively about anything cycling-related.

    Oh, sounds like public results may be per ward after all from what I'm now hearing.

    This is apparently how the count works (by someone who has been there previously)

    '

    Results are being declared as the count goes along. So they are done ward by ward, two at a time. The ballots are unfolded and put up the same way (from each ballot box). They are put in a cardboard box. Then when a whole ward is ready in its boxes, they get scanned. The the scanners allocate them as unclear or clear. The unclear ones get adjudicated by two humans, on a screen with an outward facing screen so that all the candidates/agents/electoral boffins can see (and challenge) the adjuducations. Those that are passed go back into the count; still unclear ones get referred to the returning officers for further adjuducation on a giant screen. Then the first votes are totalled by the computer to see if anyone has reached the quota. If they have, the computer distributes any 'surplus' votes. Then the person with the least 1st votes gets knocked out and their 2nd etc votes get redistributed. And so on.

    Boyfriend Of Fimm and I were having a discussion about why it was better to "vote" (by giving them a high number) for someone you actively dislike rather than not giving them a number (i.e. not voting for them at all).
    I couldn't give a good answer. Can anyone help?

    It's all about preferences. The candidates you vote #4,#5,#6 (for example) are more likely to get elected than the candidate you vote #7.

    However, there is next to no difference between leaving your final box blank, and filling it in. Technically, I think it could make a difference in the extraordinarily unlikely event that the final two candidates in the running end in a tie. If this happens, they do a "countback" - I'm not sure how this works, though.

    fimm;

    If there's only one person you dislike then leaving the box blank is fine and is nearly equivalent to marking the final number. But you probably have more than one person on your ballot paper you don't like, and if you don't vote for any of them, you're saying you equally dislike them all. This is probably not true.

    I voted all the way down to 10 because sure as hell there was no way I was ranking the 'kipper equal to or greater than anyone.

    I was tempted to go 1-6 then leave the 7th box (kipper) blank but instead did my top 3 and worked backwards in a least objectional option.

    The highlights of the day so far have been the walk down through Holyrood Park and some homemade carrot cake, although the process so far is quite interesting to watch, especially the contentious ballot screens (lots of non-use of numbers in marking). Almond candidates are about to be briefed about the provisional result...

    Multiple Xs? (spoil)
    Just one X? (presumably accepted as a 1)
    Rabbit, chicken and duck? (Strawpoll taken of those in attendance at Meadowbank of their favourite game animals to determine voting preference)

    @dhothersall: (not LD activist)

    That's an absolutely extraordinary result in Almond ward for the Lib Dems. In 2012 they got one seat in round 7. Just won two. #edincount

    Multiple Xs, often 2xSNP, are deemed as no clear preference for one candidate and are rejected. Most creative so far had a 1 for Greens (accepted) and then a selection of large numbers for others, e.g. 666 for LD (not accepted). Another used seven boxes to give the clear message: W A N K E R S.
